Overall Satisfaction with WordPress

I use WordPress for my main blog and essay archive. It's a homebase of sort for my other publications.

Pros

  • Easy to use
  • Good basic tools
  • Can't beat the cost for the baseline options (free)

Cons

  • Security and SEO are a little outdated
  • Falling behind in terms of deliverability options
  • Chaos within company management is worrying
  • Basics are all free
  • Extensions typically aren't expensive
  • Relatively easy to create exactly the kind of site you want
Self-hosted option requires a little work, but not too much technical knowledge. Their hosted option is cheap. Both are very usable, even by non-experts.
WordPress doesn't have the simplest deliverability options, especially for email and audio (podcasting), so Substack wins there. It's a lot cheaper and more customizable than Substack and Squarespace, though.
