Adobe Captivate

Adobe Captivate really excels at providing tools to create interactive, electronic learning sessions. We were able to create electronic training modules on how to use a Joomla based CMS system as well as with procedures for handling data forms. It was also helpful for creating short videos with screenshots for help guides. Perhaps the one area where the program might not excel as well would be with paper based instructions or training documents. Adobe Indesign or other programs are much more feature rich for documentation creation.

Great for managing medium sized teams of people spread over geographically dispersed offices. Not so good for small teams (less than 15). Requires a degree of time and effort to set up correctly to provide useful data for management and a good experience for staff members, but once that effort has been made the results are great.

Pros

Adobe Captivate

  • If you can think it, Captivate can most likely do it. Captivate is extremely versatile in its functionality - which means that whatever you want to happen, you can design the course to behave in that way.
  • Captivate integrates seamlessly with our Learning Management system. You can choose to publish in whichever format is accepted by your LMS: SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, AICC, .mp4, etc.
  • Captivate's software simulation feature is remarkable. Anytime we have to train software functionality to our users, we use this feature as it easily identifies the steps users must complete to reach their desired result.

  • Enables employees to draft work goals and collaborate with their supervisors on a final version - improves mutual understanding right up front.
  • Combines performance goal ratings with competency ratings and provides a blended score. Simplifies the goal weighting so you don't have to do any calculations.
  • 9-box matrix provides useful definitions and descriptions so managers can prepare development notes or plans for individual employees.

Cons

Adobe Captivate

  • Although Adobe Captivate is powerful, it is not at all intuitive. Before attending a training on Captivate, we had no idea what we were doing. The learning curve is steep.
  • Captivate's video editing skills could be improved. Other products, such as Camtasia, blow Captivate out of the water in this regard.
  • The audio functionality is odd when integrating with Adobe's Audition program. You can record the tracks in audition and then pull them in or record directly to a slide within Captivate. If you record within Captivate, the audio quality and volume does not match any track brought in from Audition.

  • Being able to schedule check-ins with employees and have it calendarized in Outlook.
  • 9 Block definitions used to show up in analysis. Don't see them anymore in latest versions.

There is no doubt in my mind that we will be using Adobe Captivate for years to come. There are so many uses for the software that we are just scratching the surface. The more we use it, the better it gets. This is a great option for anyone looking for an eLearning authoring tool.

It's not that CSB isn't a decent performance management system, but we have decided to go with just one vendor (Workday) for an HRIS/performance management/payroll system so we can directly relate pay to performance. We are more interested in having just one system that "talks" to the other pieces instead of having to work with several vendors. It reduces the hassle of having to communicate with different support teams, having different contracts, and so on.

Adobe Captivate does take some getting used to. There are features that are much more convoluted than they need to be, but overall it is a great product with a some excellent features. Being in a pretty small market, Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline dominate the space. They are not the same software, but allow for eLearning authoring. Each has their benefit and their downside, but, for me, Adobe Captivate edges out Storyline.

The saving process slows it down. It doesn’t auto save. If you leave a page, it will sometimes warn you, but not always. When you hit the save button, a window pops up that says creating/saving packets. It feels very archaic.

The support team is good in responding and maintaining communication. Sometimes...well...almost always, you will find yourself having to use a 2nd attempt with more details and easier terminology to get the tech to understand the question or situation. These techs should know English 100% and their product 100% to be on a support team for the USA. I do not get the impression this is true.

Ever rep I have ever worked with has been knowledgeable and helpful. When we first launched the training to the entire company, there were many questions and tech support issues. I was able to put people in touch with tech support directly that helped people troubleshoot their specific issues and help with the logins. Everyone was kind, patient, and helpful. While people reported frustration with learning how to make sure their pop up blockers were off, etc. there were no complaints about the support staff

I think we could have done a better job of rolling out the tool to our managers. We were under a tight timeline. In the training, we showed them everything and said go do it by this date. Looking back, I would have done it in pieces: for example, 2 weeks to write goals, 2 weeks to get sign-off from direct reports. I just let them go at it. Since then we’ve moved to agile development environment and are applying the technique to everything. In future would only do through change sprint. It is a big change I didn’t take it seriously enough.

I had a team of 3 project managing. You need a champion from every department to make sure you’re getting it right and to make sure what’s happening is communicated. It’s not something you can do without input from department heads

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Captivate

Each software offers different strengths and weaknesses; however, the cost, reliability, and ease of use of Captivate outshines the competition. As a user since the RoboDemo days, I've been continuously impressed with what can be accomplished with Adobe Captivate.
