Adobe Experience Manager

Adobe is an enterprise level software that is best suited for large amounts of web content. The entire web management experience is engineered around the author. It is a large solution with many capabilities readily available to you out of the box.

CONTENTdm

CONTENTdm is well-suited for smaller organizations as a simple solution to present a digital collection on the web. If your need is complex and requires digital preservation as part of the workflow, it may not be the best solution.

Pros

  • User friendly interface is easy to learn for people that do not have a technical background and it is easy to train employees how to use it.
  • The flexibility of content management. The content hierarchy on the website is easily changeable because it allows the user to move things around at any stage of the content management process, before or after publishing.
  • The structure of the system in templates and components is very logical and easy to explain to the senior management and/or project sponsors.

  • Relatively easy to use for staff to manage collections, without complex workflows.
  • The end-user interface is friendly, a user can easily navigate around the image with zooming, panning, etc. There is a built-in video player, which is nice.
  • The product is relatively inexpensive.
  • It is easy to implement and maintain.

Cons

  • Migration. We had multiple environments that we were constantly moving content back and forth on. Moving the content over through CQ was a bit of a challenge.
  • Integration. In some instances, Adobe CQ's built in modules would fight with custom modules. Usually the problems went away on their own.
  • Forms. Sometimes when adding a form to the page, the TO and CC sections would show up as empty when they had email addresses. Then when you went to change them, you couldn't close the settings window without clicking cancel.

  • As a digital asset management system, one would expect the capability of managing preservation, which CONTENTdm lacks.
  • Lack of batch updating and other advanced metadata management capabilities.
  • The usage statistics does not work, and the company is not planning to fix it, at least based the interaction with tech support staff. Customers were referred to use Google Analytics.

Likelihood to Renew

Adobe Experience Manager9.0

If I had the choice to renew, I would. Adobe CQ is one of the better CMS's I've been able to use. It's well organized, fast and easy to use. Although it is a little high in price, the fact that it does a good job justifies the decision to renew

Usability

I personally feel that AEM is very intuitive to use from an authoring standpoint. The entire CMS was engineered around the author. Everything about AEM is geared to helping authors generate and maintain content. There are ways that tool tips can be customized so that any individual could simply hover over and be guided step by step on how to author web content

Implementation

Adobe Experience Manager8.7
Based on 2 answers
Depending on your individual needs, It is really quite simple to create an authoring experience for a website that looks really good. I have been part of many implementations and many teams and have seen many projects that were super successful and others that were not implemented well. AEM has room for a lot of flexibility in the implementation process compared to other CMS like SharePoint

Alternatives Considered

I would say that Adobe CQ and WordPress come in neck and neck. They both have easy to understand dashboards, and both require a knowledge of a specific programming language. If you are more comfortable with JSP and Java, Adobe CQ is right for you; if you are more of a PHP person, then WordPress may be a better choice. Adobe CQ, however, controls resources 10 times better than WordPress. Looking for an image or document is easier and more organized than WordPress

Return on Investment

  • Extreme flexibility and speed to publish new pages with as little as a few hours of notice. This allowed us to be more efficient in handling landing pages for lead generation.
  • Powerful technology stack that allows for an infinite amount of customization. New ideas came up as we learned all the capabilities of CQ. It helped us innovate in the way we build and author pages.
  • Poor documentation and small community slowed our initial ramp up and development times until first release. By now this should have improved with the increased popularity.

  • It helped us to get started with our digital collections projects at a relatively low cost.
  • As our needs grew, it became apparent that we needed something more powerful, and that provides better workflows and better statistics and is able to handle the whole life cycle of digitation projects.
