Airtable

As mentioned previously, I currently developing an Airtable base to track student data and other teaching resource inventory. The children create year group databases. All of which work very well. I haven't encountered any issues or unsuitability thus far.

Innotas is progressive; focused on constant improvement and continually adding value to their product. If your organization does not have a solid change management process in place that will allow for the regular integration of these improvements, updating processes and providing the training necessary to get the most out of the tool, then you may want to reconsider this investment.

Pros

  • The website is very well laid out. It is uncluttered, easy to navigate, and is highly visual. There are a great range of field types and add-on blocks.
  • Setting up bases is very straightforward. If you get stuck the help section and videos are excellent. You can also access Airtable Universe to see examples of how the product is used by others.
  • I have submitted a number of queries by email and in each case the staff were very helpful and responded quickly. Given that I was using a free account at the time, I was very impressed.
  • Given that I have used the product with very young children successfully, I think that it is extremely well designed.

Cons

  • entering a single record seems to have to be done across several screens. Perhaps just the way we did it, but would be easier if it were all done on one screen
  • can't figure out how to "hide" a record once one of the people we are visiting dies. We don't want to delete the record, just hide it from the primary view.
  • eventually, it would be great to be able to integrate into Gmail--eg to hit the email address and have that transfer to an email...but perhaps not possible without permission from google...

  • It takes some time to figure out how to do things in Innotas and is not very intuitive in my opinion. There are lots of avenues and ways to go about getting it to do what you want it to do. I wish it was a little more straight forward when setting up a project in Innotas.

Airtable has a plethora of features that suit our needs, although there are little things that could be improved to make it perfect. I believe Airtable is actively working to improve their product so I have every confidence that Airtable is the perfect choice for our purposes.

Sometimes, I have to wait a bit longer but I'm on a low priced option so I understand why. Generally, they're able to provide me solutions to my problems as long as I'm not in a rush.

Their ability to assist and answer questions when needed is incredible. They create innovative ways to share information and help customers trouble shoot. I didn't give it a ten because I believe they could do a better job of personally reaching out to customers and providing improvement guidance based on where the customer is at and their needs at the time

Alternatives Considered

It wasn't until I became aware of Airtable that we found a solution that allows us to implement the best features of a collaborative RDBMS with our staff who don't have any training. I had previously used Zoho Creator and found that it was difficult to onboard new users because of a steeper learning curve.

We use JIRA in addition to Innotas. Innotas simply tracks the time spent whereas JIRA tracks the process and flow of the work. As I stated in a previous part of this review, I wish we could integrate the two where our time added to tasks in JIRA could roll up to the project in Innotas without having people duplicate their time entry.

Return on Investment

  • Too early to tell. I hope that it will allow for both a task-specific view that helps people keep on schedule with projects and higher-level views that help with tactical and strategic planning.
