Amazon Web Services

Each and every feature of this application is unique and is also efficient enough to help me to make suitable decisions for my company. Apart from this, if I talk about any concerns in it or any disastrous drawbacks then there are no words because this application is a lifesaver by every point of view without having anything to objectify. Moreover, this application provides me with the right of pre-built services, which benefit me when building custom cloud-based solutions.

Microsoft Azure

This is just a fantastic platform for dipping your toes into new technologies or running parallel testing of tings like ETL’s and BI Tools. Storage is so cheap and you can switch things on and off at will to save costs. Even if you are a 1-server company just managing email and file storage, going virtual is simply the best option. We still have a few on-prem servers and old Oracle items that we are swiftly moving to eliminate because the cloud is just that much easier and cost effective.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Container Engine for Kubernetes (OKE) is very well suited if you are interested in deploying cloud native applications on Oracle Cloud ( OCI ) and need container support. OKE does not work well when you have some memory and compute bottlenecks that may require configuring the underlying cloud infrastructure to work in a specific way with the Kubernetes engine through OKE since configuration is harder with OKE.

Pros

Amazon Web Services

  • AWS (Amazon Web Services) is not the easiest virtual service to set up but once you get the hang of it, it's fairly easy to install new instances (servers) and stop them. This is good for multiple reasons e.g we run multiple tests and live production servers for our different services. When we are done with one we can easily turn it off. The cost of the specifications on our virtual servers is only a fraction of the cost of what we would get locally or even on most traditional web services companies.
  • Amazon Web Services can be relatively cost efficient depending on where you are coming from. For our smaller organization, we felt the cost was worth it as other alternatives were not as affordable. The good thing with AWS is you only pay for what you use. If you want S3 (Simple Storage Service), you can pay for that. If you want to run a compute engine, EC2 can be paid for. At the end of the month, you get one bill based on your usage.
  • Because of our size as a company, AWS was easier to deploy compared to local dedicated solutions. All we had to do was take our development team through a simple 2-day course to get them on board. The ease of deployment means that we do not have to hire a specialist to deploy servers for us.

Microsoft Azure

  • Perhaps the biggest advantage of Microsoft Azure is its ease of integration with other Microsoft products. If you're used to using Excel, Access, SQL Server, and other Microsoft products, Azure will fit in nicely.
  • Azure does a good job at pointing the user into user-friendly methods for data capture and analysis. In fact, I think Azure does the best job at this compared to competing tools.
  • Microsoft Azure has recently made strides in implementing advanced analytics, such as machine learning. Their advances are great and integrate nicely with the tool.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

  • Reduction in cost as no scalability is required from an IT infrastructure side.
  • Pre-configured, engineered and simple in nature. This helps in reducing complexity on the IT side.
  • Less number of workers needed. Helps in effectively reducing man power and using comp.

Cons

Amazon Web Services

  • Better user support would be nice. It seems hard to find help when you need something specific from an Amazon employee.
  • Even though the prices are set up for enterprise they do seem high for small to mid level businesses, compared to other alternatives.
  • It would be nice to be able to have some type of DB security built in to the EC2s or as a default.

Microsoft Azure

  • Sometimes its a bit overwhelming as to the volume of functions
  • The layout could be more intuitive
  • While there are a lot of support docs it could be laid out a bit better to help you get where you need to go

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

  • Visual network designer would assistant in ensuring configuration matches intended design.
  • Automatic and seemless migration of VMs from OCI Classic to OCI would show that Oracle is taking cloud infrastructure service seriously.
  • Better, faster support. Traditional methods of filing SRs date back to the 1980s. Online realitime chat with support that know what they're doing is critical.
  • One click template image load from Oracle Cloud Marketplace is basic omission. It's available for oci-c but not oci.

We are almost entirely satisfied with the service. In order to move off it, we'd have to build for ourselves many of the services that AWS provides and the cost would be prohibitive. Although there are cost savings and security benefits to returning to the colo facility, we could never afford to do it, and we'd hate to give up the innovation and constant cycle of new features that AWS gives us.

Moving to Azure was and still is an organizational strategy and not simply changing vendors. Our product roadmap revolved around Azure as we are in the business of humanitarian relief and Azure and Microsoft play an important part in quickly and efficiently serving all of the world. Migration and investment in Azure should be considered as an overall strategy of an organization and communicated companywide.

We find it quite easy to use. The only challenge is at the outset figuring out exactly what you need, given the large number of available services and options which could take a bit of time to get familiarised with and to decide on.

Fairly easy to manage with a lot of small exceptions. Interface blades can seem to branch out many levels deep making changes and available settings difficult to find. There are seemingly endless and obscure gotchas and undocumented limitations and pitfalls that can only be realized after the fact.

Performance

Amazon Web Services

AWS does not provide the raw performance that you can get by building your own custom infrastructure. However, it is often the case that the benefits of specialized, high-performance hardware do not necessarily outweigh the significant extra cost and risk. Performance as perceived by the user is very different from raw throughput.

Amazon Web Services boasts a really quick and helpful support with multiple communication options as well. For instance, on my personal account I incurred a minor charge due to mismanagement of a service. Upon contacting support, they quickly explained the issue to me and upon request waived the bill as a first time error.

Microsoft products are well-known for 24x7 global coverage of customer support. They also sometimes come with a multiple support plan, which caters to different business requirements and needs. However, more support will also mean more cost to bare. Other than that, limited options in technical training sometimes make it quite challenging in finding the right talents for managing Microsoft Azure clouds and more dependency in Microsoft technical support.

Amazon Web Services

The maturity of AWS platform with integrations of large third-party vendors products through AWS marketplace and continuous launch of new services every year bring confidence to the users and also the ease of use and help from the large community when compared to other platform are the key primary reasons when deciding AWS.

Google Cloud has a selection of products that are specific to machine-learning, but they are better for more specific use-cases like Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, and other APIs. For our company, we were looking for APIs and cloud products that had a bit more flexibility in their interface, which is something that Azure offered for more of their products.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

We have selected Oracle Cloud Infrastructure mainly because of the native support for Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse, which is our preferred choice for data storage in the case of our newest products. Another important factor was the Ravello service allowing us to deploy our existing VMware data center workloads without any modification to the currently configured virtual machines and network.

Return on Investment

Amazon Web Services

  • We are able to test new ideas quickly using AWS hosting.
  • We are able to move from conceptual POC to fully hosted/architected cloud solution in minimal time.
  • We are able to build solutions that are 100% cloud as well as cloud-hybrid that orchestrate between our datacenters and the AWS cloud.
Anonymous | TrustRadius Reviewer

Microsoft Azure

  • This solution has allowed reduction of hardware costs. Virtualization is by far much less expensive than onsite platforms.
  • Buying and configuring systems is costly in terms of initial investment and specialized staff. Azure minimizes those costs.
  • Azure has created a positive impact on our business objectives in the sense that it has allowed system integrations to become available in a quicker time frame than typically expected.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

  • We have an internal chargeback for infrastructure and we anticipate the cost factor will be neutral.
  • We have been impressed with the provisioning aspect of OCI and expect it to save on data center staff.
  • The scalability of OCI has been a timesaver for our environments.
