Anaplan

Well Suited
  • Any process that you expect to change frequently.
  • A process within a dynamic environment, such as high tech / the startup world, where you expect significant business process changes.
  • Any process that requires a significant number of collaborators.
  • Any process where you intend for users to update logic with Excel-like formulas.
  • Any process where using Google Docs has failed to accommodate your needs for data integrity.
Less Appropriate
  • Data visualization - Anaplan has capabilities here, but other tools are more focused on this.
  • Data storage - Anaplan is not a data warehouse and has limits on what you can store.

CCH Tagetik

CCH Tagetik is great for pulling together financial data for the purposes of budgeting, planning, and forecasting. I think it will likely have other uses in our organization as well as we become more familiar with it and adept at using it.

Pros

  • Version Control -- by having one cloud-based source for our primary data, there rarely are questions about which data points to use. Everyone understands this and can reference our single source of truth.
  • Flexibility -- Anaplan is great in maintaining a balance between being a formal system, but being flexible enough to update quickly. We adopted Anaplan shortly after our IPO, when our company was still changing rapidly, and have been able to incorporate all of our business process changes into the tool.
  • Collaboration -- Anaplan allows us to have hundreds of users logged into the tool, updating information all at the same time. This was particularly useful during our account based planning implementation, when we had a number of sales managers and reps contributing their forecasts all at once.

  • It does a good job of assisting with the mapping of accounts to entities. Unlike other programs that require you to add an account for all entities, Tagetik knows to map new accounts to all entities.
  • The interface is very user friendly and intuitive. Once you have a basic understanding of how it functions, it is very easy to navigate.
  • Any time there has been issues with the tool, the Tagetik team has been very quick to assist in solving the issue. They really provide a great deal of support.

Cons

  • Enablement -- Anaplan should invest more in both its training capability and training content. Anaplan is not the most difficult tool to learn, but having more foundation in this area would make the ramp-up process significantly easier
  • Storage -- Anaplan is not a data warehouse. This is understandable given data warehousing is not their primary value proposition, but many times we run close to the storage limits of Anaplan, and it would be great if Anaplan had different storage size options for its workspaces.
  • User Interface -- Anaplan's user interface could be streamlined and improved to become more intuitive and accommodate more shortcut keys.

  • When setting up accounts, there are some fields that are not applicable to my company that I am still required to populate (i.e. exchange rate).
  • Making changes to existing reports is not the easiest thing.

I don't think we could function without the collaboration capabilities built into Anaplan that replaced disparate Excel files in the workforce planning model

The renewal of our use of Tagetik is stricly linked to the evolution of our reporting needs (especially those linked to compliance reasons). The implementation of new releases which could take benefit of state-of-the-art technologies (e.g. big data or mobile) could be done at a moderate pace in order to empower our user and make them confident about the potential and the performances of the platform.

Usability

There is a dependency in this rating - in that I find Anaplan extremely easy to use, but I've spent the necessary time developing a strong understanding of the platform. Once you understand how to use it, the platform is flexible, easy to use, and fun to use.

Tagetik has a complex engine which could be easily managed by a web-based interface and an Excel .net macro which allows a quick learning of the application's main functions. Even everyday system maintenance is very easy to manage too, once you understand the underlying consolidation model. In wider terms, once you made the first configuration and you feed the data model, many annoying routines could be easily automated, with a great gain in terms of time spent on application maintenance.

In nearly 3 years, I have only had 1 issue of being unable to access my model for an unplanned maintenance. Even planned maintenance windows are handled during low traffic hours on the weekend.

Performance

Anaplan9.0
Based on 1 answer
Everything is calculated in memory in the cloud. It's nearly instantaneous updates when you make changes. The only time things get a little slow is when you have a massive model with very intricate calculations...but "slow" for Anaplan is not what I would call "slow" for something like Hyperion. We used to have Hyperion calcs that ran for 60 mins before you could use data. The equivalent would be 60 seconds in Anaplan.

Support

Anaplan8.1
Based on 2 answers
I feel like the support team is a little lacking in product knowledge. Several times I have contacted them to get help, and ended up finding a solution to my own problem before the team could get back to me with anything useful. I have also submitted a few bugs, and never got updates to when they were fixed in later releases.

In-Person Training

Anaplan3.0
Based on 1 answer
The in-person training is simply not worth the cost. After a few weeks of playing in Anaplan, I went to the basic training and knew more than the person teaching it. a year down the road, I was the first person to complete the advance training, and again could have been teaching the class better than the person running the session. Spend some time on your own trying out different things and you will get all the understanding you need to be successful.

Online Training

Anaplan5.0
Based on 1 answer
I'm giving this a 5 simply for the anapedia outline of calculations. The online videos and trainings leave a lot to be desired, but having anapedia around to help you understand calculations has been helpful. The drawback to anapedia is the depth they go into for calculations, it is lackluster at times. Because of that, I have been working through a much more in-depth look at each calculation on my website for users to reference: http://www.anaplanguru.com/formulas/

Alternatives Considered

Anaplan requires less IT support and its calculation engine is far more powerful. Anaplan is also less expensive when total cost of ownership is considered. We also liked that you're able to use Anaplan for a variety of business planning functions rather than having a bespoke tool for budgets or commissions or demand planning etc.
Christopher Pope profile photo
Tagetik uses a Excel interface which makes it familiar but adds the benefits of a central database. At the time we were evaluating, we were also looking for a cost accounting system. We were not able to find one package that provided budgeting, forecasting, reporting and cost accounting at anywhere near the price.

Scalability

Anaplan7.0
Based on 1 answer
It's going to handle most of what you can throw at it. The problem lies in the sparsity of some datasets. When you have over 5ish dimensions of sparse data, the size of the model gets bloated for not much value. In several cases, I have had to adapt my model to account for sparsity in a way that minimized use of space, but also made interacting with the data more cumbersome.

Return on Investment

  • Time saving for business analysts - no need to spend time on collecting & crunching complex data, rather spending that time to provide meaningful business justifications
Szilvia Havasreti profile photo
  • Less time spent on data entry and report creation procedures.
  • More time spent on data analysis.
  • Less time for computing data.
  • Incorporation of multiple compliance procedures (such as SOX and ERM) on the same platform, avoiding duplicated analysis.
