We thought about Firebase, but we ultimately selected Apptentive because it is brand-agnostic. Using a Google app for an iOS application could have proved disastrous if the support for iOS had been lost down the line.

GetFeedback was implemented before Satmetrix. It was a cheap and cheerful product, even at the top tier of its license cost, tying it into Salesforce was incredibly easy. Just getting from survey to results in Salesforce was a pleasure. I really miss this world!

It works very well for consumer-centric applications. If you had an app with in-app purchases, or a retail store app, or even a simple gaming application, Apptentive would be more powerful. In our case, we have an app that serves as a productivity tool, so Apptentive gives us great insight and tools, but we do not take advantage of them as much as other apps might.

Satmetrix is best suited if you don't currently use Salesforce. A lot of its main selling points are negated by the virtue of having Salesforce. Case management is in Salesforce, reporting is in Salesforce, the structure that NPX imposes is actually clunky and unwieldy, and is much more streamlined on competing platforms such as GetFeedback and SurveyMonkey. The only thing that leaves is the consultative service on being best practice and I don't really get to see any of that.

Cons
  • Apptentive's metrics aren't as customizable as we would like but what it does measure it does a good job at.
  • Managing multiple apps (iOS and Android) can make for extra work because you're duplicating work on Notes and Events.
  • Finding the right way to interact can take multiple tests, surfacing best practices across the industry would be a help.

  • Java compatibility, needs to work with newer versions. Prompts to use an older Java version in a browser can be annoying while creating reports and have to close them, then reopen with the right version.

Costs would play a big role in a potential renewal. Additionally, with the experience gained from the original project and education, I would feel comfortable running a program with a less costly vendor.

Alternatives Considered
We haven't used or evaluated another tool similar to Apptentive. We selected it and it has worked for what we needed it for. I'm sure other solutions provide similar options. We keep Apptentive because it is already integrated with our apps and we've continued to be able to use it for what we need without worrying about how a new tool would connect to everything that goes into a mobile app.
