CommVault

Well Suited: Large and complex environments with high retention and varied data sets. If VTL is desired this solution is amazing. Less Well Suited: Highly virtualized environments who need a simple turn key solution with fast recovery times.

Pros

  • Fully Agentless Architecture - One DS Client has the ability to protect all of your environment without the need to install agents on each machine saving time and money.
  • Incremental Forever - No need to run weekly or monthly masters generations.
  • Military Grade Security
  • Deduplication
  • Mass Deployment functionality
  • Continuous Data Protection
  • VM Replication
  • All data fully compressed and encrypted for WAN optimisation

  • CommVault has the ability to backup data sets from a broad (maybe the broadest) set of technologies. Everything from traditional agent based backups, to bare metal, and the most modern virtual machine backups.
  • CommVault has steadily evolved with an been on the forefront of the evolution of the data center from physical machine to virtual machines to software driven solutions.
  • If you need to use VTL functionality, CommVault is still one of the best.
  • Reporting tools within CommVault are very strong out of the box and do not require any additional technology to leverage.
  • Releases of CommVault are typically well tested and easy to install in place or plan migrations.

Cons

  • Management
  • All around features and ability to quick add new features
  • User interfaces
Stephen Sifers profile photo
  • The Java client (and only client) has been a pain point as it is very particular as to what version of Java you have running
  • Over the years the deduplication engine has been less than robust, much of which has been resolved in the latest version. There are still some deduplication gotchas that you need to plan and be prepared for. V11 is really the first version I would consider truly ready for prime time with lareg deduplication workloads.
  • Their windows agents still have a reliance on .Net which means not all upgrades are without a reboot. If you are not careful you can leave a system unprotected until it is rebooted.
  • The custom report engine requires you to understand the underlying database structure and needs to be improved to be more intuitive with selectable criteria and fields.

Usability

Easy to use, great scalability, feature packed... Asigra is truly an end-to-end enterprise solution, not simply a point product. Asigra handles backup and restoration of client data across multiple OS platforms- Windows, Linux, Unix, IBM AS400, Mac X, etc... They include servers, desktops, laptops, mobile devices, virtual and physical machines. Some key features to note: Deduplication, Continuous Data Protection, Agentless Backup, Replication (New), Silent mode installation, Best of breed/start of art Security, Storage Discovery/Assessment tools, Autonomic healing... and more.Asigra simplifies Cloud backup, period. Do your clients want a full Public Cloud, Hybrid... what about Private built solution? Asigra handles all, with ease and, with over 26 years of ZERO security breaches.

Not a simple solution to use and one with a lexicon and vocabulary you will need to be familiar with in order to use the product to its potential.

Reliability and Availability

Asigra8.8
Based on 5 answers
Over 6 consecutive years our Asigra Backend had 99.99% uptime and provided 7x24 data restore availability.
Software is robust in operations, provides N+1 node architecture to protect against failure of half of the nodes (majority of the nodes still up) and software based replication to protect against data loss across two geographically independent datacenter locations. Why not 10 points? Some major upgrades still require short downtime within a planned maintenance windows.

Support is very triage based now, for the price it should be full service support and not a cold hand off for a support case.

Online Training

Asigra1.0
Based on 1 answer
Anything training past level 1 and level 2 is a waste of time. They do not offer training, just an exam and require you to read 2500 pages of their documentation as their training. They are selling you something which you already have. Training exams are far fetched and cover topics hidden within the documentation. A lot of their documentation does not match across itself. They don't even follow the standard versions Major.Minor.ServicePack.Hotfix. They use the MAJOR.MAJOR.MAJOR.Hotfix method, which doesn't match their documentation. They require you to take training in order to keep your engaged hybrid partnership. If you ask me personally, their training is a scam to make more money.

Implementation

Asigra1.2

Quick to install, easy to create jobs, schedules and retention policies. No large cycles of setting up backup volumes or trash volumes. Retention job itself configures the BLM functionality so you don't need an expertise to handle the BLM module separately.

Alternatives Considered

Best of all options, covers most if not all scenarios, granular backup, scheduling, and retention options. Provides self-service restores, centralized web management interface, and granular reporting.

IBM TSM has Commvault beat in true HSM, but TSM is so complex to mange and run and is probably a tad lighter on resources, but not enough to warrant using it. NetBackup was the speed king for years, but after Symantec virtually abandoned the product their are years behind in innovation. The NetBackup UI is ancient and the reporting is weak. Veeam has a very specific target audience and that is the purely virtualized SMB what does not have much to protect. Veeam's deduplication is barely works and their compression is just OK. Veeam underlying disk usage is very wasteful and can quickly add up, Commvault is far more space efficient for the backup target than any of the competitors that offer deduplication

Return on Investment

  • Compression and deduplication decreases required back end storage
  • Self service restores reduce helpdesk calls
  • Various deployment options to meet RPO/RTO for any budget
John Whitford profile photo
  • With new licenses changes and optinons, ROI has improved greatly.
  • Having to retrain several employees have remained a challenge.
  • Other products are moving quicker to simplify their product set, CommVault is a little slower moving.
