It's an excellent tool for monitoring results and looking for failures, errors, or abnormal behavior in your applications; also, you can configure alerts to be sent to the appropriate person in case of failures. It can be used to run a smoke test so you can save some time. It's not the appropriate tool to run regression testing.

GitLab

GitLab has been used to prevent issues on flow. With its secure secure platform and a friendly interface it helps to operate in a more seamless manner and makes inter departmental communications and intra departmental communications easier for us to work within our regional teams. Furthermore, we add[ed] the activity monitoring feature that allows us to track the activities.

Pros

Catchpoint

  • Reporting
  • Customized scripts

GitLab

  • It uses the well-known Git language to communicate with, which is very popular
  • The interface is slick and easy to get used to
  • They are very transparant in their security issues
  • Updating the software from the command line is the easiest I have come across

Cons

Catchpoint

  • Would like Catchpoint to replace awful canned scheduled reports with customized ad-hoc reports built from the Performance tab.
  • Pricing for Catchpoint Points is too high. Limits the number of tests we use.

GitLab

  • The permissions system i adequate, but could use some additional flexibility. As it is, there are only predefined roles a user can be put into.
  • The issue tracking system is somewhat immature. It's effective for tracking bugs and enhancements, but is not very usable as a project management system.

Gitlab is the best in its segment. They have a free version, they have open-source software, they provide a good service with their SaaS product, they are a fully-remote company since the beginning (which means they are fully distributed and have forward-thinking IMO). I would certainly recommend them to everyone.

Usability

It's hard to find the functionalities that I am looking for in the application. Even if I did something in the past, after a time I have to re-learn again where the functionalities are. This is a powerful tool, but not user-friendly. Texts in the buttons and menus are not always meaningful or easily comprehensible.

The web console management is superior and I would have given Gitlab a 10, but sometimes it is hard to find documentation about a configuration setting in the gitlab.rb configuration file. As we move everything to code that means moving our CVS tools to code as well - and Gitlab to code. The usability of Gitlab from the end user's perspective is superior and the usability from the operations team is very good and getting better but there could be a little improvement in the gitlab.rb config file layout and documentation.

Whenever asked for, the representatives would jump onto a call and help us out with ongoing issues without any trouble.

At this point, I do not have much experience with Gitlab support as I have never had to engage them. They have documentation that is helpful, not quite as extensive as other documentation, but helpful nonetheless. They also seem to be relatively responsive on social media platforms (twitter) and really thrived when GitHub was acquired by Microsoft

Alternatives Considered

Catchpoint

We are an ex-Keynote customer and an ex-Gomez customer. Catchpoint is better than both of those platforms.

GitLab

GitLab has great security features built in for the enterprise. From SSO and cloud-centric deployment of the GitLab instance, to the SAST and DAST support. This gives GitLab a leg up in managing security aspects of code management and delivery. At the same time, the integration that GitLab has to CI/CD pipelines to cloud platforms greatly automates code deployment.

Return on Investment

Catchpoint

  • It's very helpful to run tests after a deployment or release, so we can quickly see at the results before investing time on testing manually or running other tools.
  • It provides alerts, so we can be aware of errors even during the weekends (when our engineering team is not usually looking at the application).

GitLab

  • Openness is a mandate at the Digital Impact Alliance, Gitlab helps achieve this in all aspects of the work
  • The built-in build pipelines, along with in-browser editing of source code make managing the static site extremely easy
  • Gitlab nears feature parity with github, making software development workflows fairly easy
