Experience testing. We have many many many forms that require the user step thru certain sequences to get to specific places to enter in the information. Once achieved, the user must use that information to perform other actions that must be frequently tested for response time and information accuracy. Once the first several forms are completed, they will in turn effect the outcome of the other actions. CP allows us to test each step of the experience and allows us to focus on specific actions and results. CP is not well suited to test environments that are ever changing as it is not as modularized as it can be. In environments that constantly change, it is difficult to keep CP up to date.

GitLab

In our organisation we have a lot of applications that require a reliable source to manage source code and GitLab helps us to achieve this very well. We have functionality like after every merge request merger we have to deploy code to our server which is running on Kubernetes pods and GitLab is very helpful in this as it has a nice and easy implementation for integrating CI/CD for the deployment of code to servers and then we can our manual jobs to fetching data. Gitlab provides us a job status with visual logs and suggestions to make it better.

Pros

Catchpoint

  • Performance Chart Metrics: series of graphs and a chart summary. The number of graphs drawn depends on the metrics and settings chosen for the chart.
  • Catchpoint synthetic test that will be set up target an endpoint or URLS
  • Catchpoint Real User Monitoring (RUM) collects data from users browsing our sites via a JavaScript snippet.
Habtamu Asfaw | TrustRadius Reviewer

GitLab

  • Safeguards implemented are customizable and allow our organization to set our level of verification before merging.
  • One of the smoothest and most well-organized version control software products on the market.
  • Super widespread use so our use of GitLab is understandable and usable by the customer with little "translation" as to what we are doing and what they are doing.

Cons

Catchpoint

  • Adding an endpoint to be monitored requires a lot of steps (since there are a lot of functions and features). A quick-add feature would be nice. If the settings are similar, the interface allows you to duplicate an existing setup and tweak the settings.

GitLab

  • GitLab could improve some of the confusion around how permissions work (sometimes unclear why one user can do an action, but not another)
  • GitLab should provide a way to rerun a merge pipeline, without rerunning the original Merge Request pipeline
  • When jobs fail, it would be awesome if every user could see the information on the runner and the versions of the software it is running on (to better debug the issue)

Gitlab is the best in its segment. They have a free version, they have open-source software, they provide a good service with their SaaS product, they are a fully-remote company since the beginning (which means they are fully distributed and have forward-thinking IMO). I would certainly recommend them to everyone.

Usability

It's hard to find the functionalities that I am looking for in the application. Even if I did something in the past, after a time I have to re-learn again where the functionalities are. This is a powerful tool, but not user-friendly. Texts in the buttons and menus are not always meaningful or easily comprehensible.

The web console management is superior and I would have given Gitlab a 10, but sometimes it is hard to find documentation about a configuration setting in the gitlab.rb configuration file. As we move everything to code that means moving our CVS tools to code as well - and Gitlab to code. The usability of Gitlab from the end user's perspective is superior and the usability from the operations team is very good and getting better but there could be a little improvement in the gitlab.rb config file layout and documentation.

I have supported 20-30 different vendor tools in my career and Catchpoint, by far, has the best customer service that I have ever experienced. They are very responsive and thoroughly track and provide visibility on progress. Their level one resources are generally very knowledgeable. Also, support is more than happy to join bridge calls to help troubleshoot application issues if requested. Finally, the scope of service provided by support is not just typical support activities - they will also help in creating new monitors, providing training/education, etc... I am extremely happy with Catchpoint support!

At this point, I do not have much experience with Gitlab support as I have never had to engage them. They have documentation that is helpful, not quite as extensive as other documentation, but helpful nonetheless. They also seem to be relatively responsive on social media platforms (twitter) and really thrived when GitHub was acquired by Microsoft

Alternatives Considered

Catchpoint

Primary reason we went with Catchpoint is that they offered us actual backbone testing locations. All the other features like a filmstrip and traceroutes have been very beneficial as well and were not available in the competitors' solutions.

GitLab

Gitlab made our product life cycle efficient. It has a better user interface and user experience. GitLab doesn't clutter with many features upfront and provides a lot of free services, which is missing in any other product. For small teams, it's the best piece of software. I always recommend giving it a try.

Return on Investment

Catchpoint

  • The ROI has been very good with this product, we have seen multiple folds of time-saving by using this tool and preempting any risk associated with non-performant times of our server, hence increasing the team's capability to respond to certain downtime scenarios and the level of action that needs to be taken.
  • Catchpoint’s observability solution makes it easier to have global visibility of our website's performance and to fix issues quicker
  • I don't have any negatives, every good product comes with a cost, that is the fact but the Catchpoint tool has ultimately improved our ROI much beyond the changes that we pay

GitLab

  • We are moving towards Gitlab only as our SCM & CI tool. So it would be an alternative to Jenkins. Saving our licensing cost there.
  • We have also stopped using Confluence & using Gitlab for our documentation purposes. Reducing cost there as well.
