Google Data Studio

Google Data Studio is great for simple, on-demand analytics and visualizations. The user interface is intuitive enough so that you don't need to be a data scientist in order to get some useful info from your data sets. If you are comfortable with having to manually export and load a CSV file every time you run it in order to get fresh data, then it will work for you - even better if you already use Google's platforms or one of the other supported connectors such as MySQL. However, the cloud-only option means that data compliance requirements will need to be taken into consideration.

Qlik Sense

Qlik Sense Enterprise is an ideal BI solution for mid- to large-scale organizations, especially those with many on-premises data sources. The overhead of administration would make Qlik Sense Cloud the better platform for small organizations or those who have already moved much of their data infrastructure into the cloud. The robust data modelling allows many wildly different data sources to be cleansed and organized with robust flexibility.

Qlik Sense

  • Qlik Sense reports the data from the QVD files really well so the end-user experience is always optimum. Hardly any wait time is ever noticed at all which is magnificent compared to some other products in this space.
  • The fact that Qlik Sense is also already fully mobile device-ready is a big bonus. Other applications have to have different variations either declared upfront or at least tested but Qlik Sense works really well whether via the designated proprietary Qlik Sense Mobile App (from the App store) or just in a standard browser like Safari.
  • Data ingestion times are really optimum too since millions of records can be added to a QVD file in only a few minutes. This helps our organization with optimizing the overnight loading window.
  • The background loading tasks scheduling is also user-friendly and robust with good error logging and failure/success monitoring available.
  • We use SAP for transactions and SAP BI for data warehousing so it is very useful to also use Qlik Sense along with the proprietary Qlik Sense SAP Connector so that data can be retrieved as datasets from BW Query results. This helps leverage all our investment in the BW modeling including the full SAP BW query catalog when ingesting data into the QVD files. At the same time, the SQL connector can retrieve data from our SAP HANA database with ease too.
  • The ability to develop on the iPad is also a bonus that is often not available in other tools in this domain.
  • The security modeling is relatively easy to maintain and integrates well with our Azure identity management system. This all makes user management tasks very seamless and robust, ensuring that only those that really need access to the Qlik Sense system are granted hat access and if they leave their access is quickly revoked.

Cons

Google Data Studio

  • Having to pay for third-party connector access.
  • Limited in terms of the number of recipients that can be included in the scheduled reporting.
  • Lots of information on some pages making it hard to understand from time-to-time. Could be cleaner from a UX perspective.

Qlik Sense

  • Limited options when adjusting colors of graphs and charts
  • Limited options for adjust[ing] how graphs and charts look or [how] users interact with them
  • If QlikView has 1000 knobs to turn, Qlik Sense has 100. This hurts developers ability to build robust reports and applications
  • Many new features are cloud only
  • No unified hub for View and Sense for on premise solutions

It is the simplest and least expensive way for us to automate our reporting at this time. I like the ability to customize literally everything about each report, and the ability to send out reports automatically in emails. The only issue we have been having recently is a technical glitch in the automatic email report. Sadly, there is almost no support for this tool from Google, but is also free, so that is important to take into consideration

Google Data Studio has a clean interface that follows a lot of UX best practices. It is fairly easy to pick up the first time you use it, and there is a lot of documentation on line to help troubleshoot, if needed

Standard user interface and powerful analytic functions is GREAT.As technical person working in the background there are more things to do to make this a completely great tool. Some functions that should be standard requires consult scripting and hours. Now we are using it quite advanced and with many servers and in combination with QlikView. So overall I love the tool. But it could be better and user friendly and powerful in the background

Qlik is available when we need it. The only issue we experience is memory on the server, Qlik is very memory hungry and if you loads lots of data having enough memory to support the dataset is important. This needs to be taken into consideration as performance issue occur if you don't

I rated the overall support for Google Data Studio a five because it offers limited real-time chat of phone support. The best resource available to get analyst questions on Google Data Studio reporting and integration capabilities answered, is an online Google support portal with text and video tutorials: https://support.google.com/datastudio. But the analyst needs to know the correct keyword(s) to find accurate answers to his or her technical questions. Or be in the correct category of questions: Connect, Visualize, Share or Manage. So, the existing self-help portal works fine to answer basic questions on metrics, dimensions, how to integrate a data source, or how to create a custom report. It doesn't do a great job of answering advanced questions on why data doesn't match between Data Studio and Google Analytics. Why data is not showing up even though the dashboard sources have been refreshed, or how to create a custom Google Sheets to auto-update dashboard every month.

Not only can you ask the support team for help, but you can also ask the community. Also with the community there is a vast amount of problems that have already been solved. The problem you are encountering has a likely chance of already being discussed and even solved in the community section saving you time from reaching out.

Qlik delivered on its promises and has been key to supporting the new world we live in . If we hadn't chosen Qlik sense when we did life would have been harder and our organisation wouldn't have been able to mange the CoVid-19 pandemic the way we have . We live in a data led world and Qlik does that for us.

Alternatives Considered

Google Data Studio

Google Analytics and Google Data studio work well with each other. They don't necessarily stack against each other, Google Data studio just makes interpreting the data more visual and concise. I recommend both and not one over the other. Both are free tools provided by Google, so I highly recommend using and understanding both.

Qlik Sense

We evaluated Domo, Tableau, and Qlik Sense. We chose Qlik because of it's ability to better work with multiple and large data sets. Qlik Sense has the ability to concatenate all measurable (fact) data into a single table instead of needing to create multiple fact tables. This keeps the data model streamlined and everything related.

Return on Investment

Google Data Studio

  • Free, so the only investment is time
  • Because it doesn't have native support of non-Google sources, it can cost more money than Tableau
  • The time spent formatting the templates or building connectors can have a negative impact on ROI
  • As a agency, charging for the reporting service is profitable after the first month or two after building the dashboard.
Scott Walker | TrustRadius Reviewer

Qlik Sense

  • Very positive from a Corporate level, provides insights that were previous done ad hoc and not nearly as in depth.
  • Single source of truth for the organization - reduces the number of reports with different methodologies.
  • Easy to track status of projects and ensure everyone is on the same page.
