Heap

Heap is well suited for PMs looking to gain fast insights/quickly identify who is clicking on what and how often. The data we collect from Heap is also leveraged and mixed into our more complex data science dashboards. I like Heap for its ability to answer specific questions quickly. However, if I wanted to be able to track time spent between events, I can only find the average. I also cannot follow a user through all the flows since our product has so many URLs and variations in the workflow. It's hard to read the flow result with so many cards popping up.

For any direct to consumer business that cares about their customer, and the message that they serve to those customers, then this is the tool for you.It is easy to "test and chase" into strategies by simultaneously creating multiple campaigns. Lexer's tool measures the performance of each for the continuous improvement of direct marketing decisions. It is also perfect if you're looking to turn responsive customer service strategies into proactive customer experiences. Their engage desktop tool significantly improves productivity, meaning some of your least productive staff can become high performers within the business and establish a platform against which they can grow.

Pros

Heap

  • Heap makes it simple to define elements in your application to track engagement with.
  • Heap is great because it's always tracking everything so you don't have to define everything you want to track immediately. The data is always there for you to investigate.
  • Support is great and perhaps the thing that is most valuable. They're always happy to help you in whatever you're trying to achieve with Heap.

Lexer

  • Easy for all levels of employees to use.
  • Fast implementation with immediate learnings.

Cons

Heap

  • Heap creates a "misunderstanding" between marketing and our data team. It is easy to create a report that shows a story that is not true due to incorrect filters/data elements.
  • Breakdowns on some data is not available and it makes it hard to get the exact report you need.
  • We have tons of reports, all almost the exact same. It is too hard to find them unless you already know that they exist.

Heap helps me understand key data points without fussing with the formatting of a dashboard. It gives me the benefit of data analyzation without the fuss of the formatting - as well as the ease of sharing data collected with my colleagues

Sometimes, Heap has issues reconciling similar selectors, and I have not found the manual tagging system to be the most intuitive, especially when best practices are not used when designing the front-end infrastructure. Even so, it helps that the data is unmodified, and all analytics are done through an interfaced layer, so damage and confusion [are] not permanent.

Heap doesn't affect page load times considerably nor has a large impact [on] our overall score, as far as page loading times inside of the tool its pretty reliable to retrieve data as much as "instant" that it can be the delay seems to be on data getting tracked into the servers to be read but it's not significant.

I haven't used support much but when I did it was very strong. Heap has great reps that provide reliable responses and prompt communication.

Instant responses are available over the phone, Slack, or Email. We are also able to have meaningful top-to-top conversations where their President of North America will talk to ours as frequently as is needed. They are true partners who genuinely care about us as a client.

The implementation was more straightforward than I imagined it would be. There was minimal set up required from our internal developers. Training was the biggest hurdle.

Alternatives Considered

Heap

Heap stands out because, unlike Google Analytics, it helps us analyze both our SaaS product data as well as web data. As mentioned before, it's also much easier to use compared to GA, and has a much better UI. It also records and tracks all events on our website, which means we do not need to pre-define events as in the case of GA.

We decided not to pursue alternates to Lexer based on:1. Value proposition. Lexer had the greatest value.2. Our belief in other products' internal team and ongoing support capabilities. Other companies didn't feel as believable.3. User interface. Lexer has done an incredible job making their tool extremely simple to use.

Return on Investment

Heap

  • At Boardable we use data from Heap to calculate a Product Qualified Lead score, and a churn score, to first qualify Free Trial accounts and assign them to Sales reps and then to find customers at risk of churning. Having the ability to find the highest opportunity prospects has made our Sales team a lot more efficient (70% of our trials spend less than 5 minutes in the product and we keep those off the Sales team's desk, focusing them on the 30% that are indicated to convert, which brought our overall conversion rate up 40% month-over-month).
  • Heap is critical for our Growth team to optimize the user journey to find the value in our product as quickly as possible. We formed the Growth team and bought Heap at the same time, and the first couldn't operate without the second. Our first big win using Heap was improving our sign-up flow (a very common blind-spot for product led companies), increasing the number of successful sign-ups by 200%.
  • Saving person-hours: Heap has freed up so many hours of time (20/wk ~= $1000/wk) that we were spending doing analytics manually. Taking things off the Engineering team's plate was key, and Heap more than pays for itself just in the amount of time we get back.

  • We're able to create strategies around lapsed customers and return this consumer subset to revenue.
  • We're able to more easily identify consumer purchasing habits to create customer journeys.
