We use IBM Apptio exclusively for application TCO reporting. It compiles data from different sources then export to Excel to customize report for the user. Our intention is to start a TCO dashboard within IBM Apptio, so Excel is no longer required and leadership can drill down. We are also trying to fully automate our cloud billing.

Good tool to start FinOps journey in a medium sized (or above) company. Currently missing AI capabilities that are now available with a lot of FinOps vendors in the market. Also, apptio currently does not have FOCUS dataset nomenclature, that can be worked upon.

Pros
  • The ATUM model and its configuration provide a trusted taxonomy for costs
  • The participative planning and budgeting process enabled by the product increases transparency into forecasted cost and allows for understanding service options prior to costs being incurred.
  • The loading of data through APIs eases data refresh processes

  • It shows the visibility into the cost and a single pane of glass for all of our cloud providers, multiple products in those multi-cloud. So it shows us our spending across the cloud by vendor, by product, and by all the tags that we have in the cloud. So it gives us visibility into many different directions in our cost.

Cons
  • For Validation purpose, if possible, enable the JavaScript code so we can the hide the Tab based on current period and more validation we can perform on client side.
  • Sometimes we are faced the data load issue
  • Improvement the performance tunning

  • There is currently no ability to apply global filters over the data in cloudability. Rather users must go through a difficult process to create custom views which they are later able to apply over top of their datasets.
  • Drill functionality does not really exists but appears to be more of an after though add-on. Yes you are able to "drill" but the visuals disappear and even the ability to export the more detailed information.

It is hands down the most innovative SaaS on the market today. In my humble opinion it will be just as big or bigger than Salesforce, Workday and all of the greats. I would advise any big company to take advantage of Apptio and renew on an annual basis with their support team!

Cloudability has been one solution for almost all of our FinOps needs. Except for Data transfer costs, we have covered all use cases and have made significant savings across our cloud infrastructure. Reporting has provided management a deeper analysis into their spending and helped them forecast their budgets for next year

Usability
I have some users that find financial reports difficult, but most users really enjoy being able to configure their monthly forecast views and drill into their expenses. I wish all were able to embrace the functionality and that it were more intuitive. I think the updated UI that was revealed at the conference is exciting and I look forward to that assisting in adoptability at our organization.

Support Rating
I have not been directly involved with the post sales support team. However, that team has provided training materials and recommended practices that have been very helpful in coming up to speed on how to more fully use the product. My understanding from both vendor management and our upline stakeholders is that our relationship with Apptio is strong.

While there have been few support cases where the experience was good. But in multiple support cases it's firstly delayed and even after weeks or months of time, team is not able to provide us with the RCA of the issue. All they are claiming is the issue is now fixed which I still see coming back after few days or weeks as we've never identified and addressed the root cause.

Training was adequate, but the real learning begins when you start using the product, like most things. All major functions were covered so as an entry point, was a good introduction to the product. The training pace was good as well, the areas were covered in decent depth, without being too much of an information overload.

Well, so far. Apptio Consulting covered specific model architecting areas particularly. Most of the heavy lifting is being done in-house with support from Apptio as it relates to tool impacts and needs. Some administrative tasks were redundant

I personally have not used or evaluated any other product similar to Apptio. I can say that this is a great service and we use it often and we are growing how we use it. We are planning on expanding the way we use this database. We are excited to hear about more of the apptio products/modules that would benefit our agency

Return on Investment
  • I would say it's definitely seen savings, already seen some savings on the cloud front. Specifically an app that got out of control. We're very early in our cloud migration process, so a lot of the engineering teams are still new to the process of migrating apps to the cloud. So it was an app that got out of control, it was caught with app year reports and they were able to drop the costs substantially, we'll say for that application. So that's an example of a cloud savings that we've made.
  • We've also seen savings in the business lines in terms of device consumption, so people with multiple laptops and VDI, trying to just trim down the ratio of devices to people has been important for our business lines to save money. Also helps our technology teams forecast unit consumption, volume consumption of those devices in the future if there's not having to worry about the same person having multiple laptops.

  • Has allowed for more Directors to be up to date with their Budget data and know where they are standing
  • Has saved thousands of dollars in that each agency does not have to pay for individual budget management.
  • Has saved hours of time by making the data easily uploadable instead of having to manually organize all the data.
