Quite excellent and secure Cloud solution from IBM community which is equipped with flexible Cloud data management features and the environment provided for easy data interaction is very secure. The access of my different data on Cloud through IBM Cloud Bare Metal Servers is quick and its network performance management tools are reliable.

    Rackspace

Rackspace is very well suited as a IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) provider, particularly when you're planning on leaving the infrastructure up for a period of time. They seem to focus a bit more on that aspect of infrastructure. That is to say, they seem to promote running servers for longer periods of time and not spinning up/shutting down servers frequently based on usage spikes. While, they do support that sort of availability -- they don't have features built into their offering, necessarily, that make it a lot easier to implement. Our experiences with Rackspace have been 100% around their cloud platform, but they have another entire part of their business that is centered around hosting/maintaining/supporting physical hardware (bare metal). They have had a great reputation over the last several years (10+) for being top-notch providers in this space, which is one reason we even considered them for our Cloud-based hosting needs. We don't have any direct experience with their "bare metal" offerings, but their reputation is certainly great, and worth noting.

    Pros

    IBM

    • Performance - the servers perform really well, even under stress. We have some long build processes running concurrently, and the server [can] serve other applications without any problems.
    • Secure - for the most part, the servers are very secure and IBM provides many tools to help [make] sure the servers stay that way.
    • Highly Available - while we have experienced various downtimes and outages with other IBM Cloud offerings, so far, we have not experienced any with [IBM Cloud] Bare Metal Servers.

    • Fanatical Support - I can't stress how great their team is. Not only are they knowledgeable, whenever I call in (during the day or in the middle of the night), I never have to wait more than a minute to speak to someone.
    • Webmail, Hosted Exchange, and Office365 Support - As an IT team of one, Rackspace's cloud solution and migration team has really helped me over the years to minimize issues for users, but also provide a reliable and flexible email platform.

    Cons

    IBM

    • [In my experience, the] Customer Service Agreement (CSA) has many gaps in terms of responsibility with Bare Metal Servers.
    • [I believe] IBM should be deploying servers and firmware updating all components before providing them to customers to prevent component failure.
    • [I feel] IBM needs lots of improvement with their legacy VPN to access IMPI management tools. The level of security of it is unparalleled when it works. Having access to KVM / IPMI is critical for any business, and when their VPN service is not working.
    • [From my experiences,] IBM deployed faulty hardware, or failed to update firmware per Lenovo notices, only to pass off blame.
    • [In my opinion,] IBM's General Counsel and Paralegal held our data/company hostage when components failed, [in my experience] to IBM "gross negligence" (in their words), only to release it if we were to limit damages to $1,000.

    • Their backup tools are confusing and could use some clarification. We ended up getting charged for backup licenses on nonexistent servers, and that was frustrating because they would not refund us the fees as they declared it our fault for misunderstanding their terms.
    • They need to stop charging for "fanatical" support. Their support service has gotten worse over the years and now they are charging us a monthly fee. It's enough of a rub that we'll most likely move our servers to a different company.

The company does not put as much focus on usability as other cloud competitors and it is kind of clear. It would be good to take a quarter and gather intense feedback, and then another quarter and focus purely on UI enhancements and backend interoperability

The support is decent and in an emergency they will help you if you make enough noise. However the creation of "class of customers" within the IBM ecosystem I think is a step backwards as it can put emergencies on the back burner simply because we didn't pay enough in monthly fees.

I've used IBM professional services in a few cases (not for my company but for some of my clients), and the people in professional services are really helpful. You call them and set a meeting for the initial planning session, but they usually most of the work already done, they just ask some questions and they fill in the blanks. However, in some cases implementation can take longer than planned.

Configured file systems on bare metal servers and was able to increase the size whenever required. Can limit the costs initially to understand the application demand and need. Later, have the flexibility to increase the size of the file system as the application grows bigger and bigger without any hassle.

AWS is more and reliable and will work better for our organization from now on. Rackspace has served its purpose but is a slowly dying service. I will still happily give them kudos where it is deserved and they did great in their prime. Amazon is slowly taking over and edging everyone out and you need to jump ship at some point if you want to keep up.

    Return on Investment

    IBM

    • The reliability is the keyword. Never has any issue during 6 years in service.
    • Service pricing is quite higher then the average market price, there was a moment that we were in difficult financial situation and almost couldn't pay the service.
    • After all, the IBM reliability is the main factor that we're still in the business until today.

    Rackspace

    • Responded to slowdowns very quickly, therefore negating lose of earnings at peak times
    • When speaking to the right people eventually, they suggested solutions that have improved server response, which should have a positive impact on site speed (and so CR)
    • Load balancing allows for an efficient workflow in implementing new features while not losing traffic
    • Originally set some configurations low, which negatively impacted server performance. This was rectified with memory expansion following some discussions.
