Palo Alto firewall only affords by Large level infrastructure having a budget for Security Prospect. I will recommend it for the Card information industry & Confidential data solutions. Because it provides a bucket of security features that are not easily vulnerable.

WatchGuard Network Security

WatchGuard is very well suited for a set-it-and-forget-it scenario. For probably the first year or two of having our Firebox, we didn't change a single setting after the first initial setup. It ran fine, operating to full capacity without any interactions or tweaks. Great to just set up and leave it alone.

Pros

Next-Generation Firewalls - PA Series

  • The PA handles VPN connectivity without missing a beat. We have multiple VPN tunnels in use for redundancy to cloud-based services.
  • The PA has great functionality in supporting failover internet connections, again with the ability to have multiple paths out to our cloud-based services.
  • The PA is updated on the regular with various security updates, we are not concerned with the firewall's ability to see what packets are really flowing across the network. Being able to see beyond just IP and port requests lets you know things are locked down better than traditional firewalls.
  • It is a great overall kit, with URL filtering and other services that fill in the gaps between other solutions without breaking the bank.

WatchGuard Network Security

  • Control of web access of devices within the network.
  • Automatic address blocking after successive external attack attempts.
  • VPN feature between WatchGuard devices very transparent and stable.
  • Simple and very functional Policy Manager management console.
  • Simple and reliable spamBlocker feature, really holding back suspicious emails.

Cons

Next-Generation Firewalls - PA Series

  • Our specific model is a bit slow and outdated and takes up to 10 minutes to commit a configuration change.
  • Nested security rules would be helpful instead of a linear approach. But rule creation in general is very simple.
  • Documentation gives a very straight forward answer to some items but is very vague in others.
  • Support could be a little better. An issue we had a tech was insistent it was the "other guy" and it ended up being the very latest PAN OS upgrade.
Christopher St.Amand | TrustRadius Reviewer

WatchGuard Network Security

  • It would be nice to have a fully functional web interface [for the] server manager. The server manager is often very slow over remote connections.
  • Better support for OpenVPN server, or at least an easier way of creating tunnels using OpenVPN.
  • user VPN user management is a little confusing until you understand that all users need to be created under SSL users, regardless of VPN type.
  • Would be nice to have traffic statistics on traffic management objects.

The PA5220s have far exceeded what we have expected out of them. It was a bit of a learning curve coming from another vendor, but everything falls into place now with ease. The capabilities of the solution still surprise us, allowing us to remove other costly hardware and providing a single point of management needed

Ever since 2007, WatchGuard Fireboxes and WatchGuard network layer security solutions have been the most security effective with the lowest TCO of any solution on the market when properly implemented and properly maintained. As with any network layer security solution, the underlying network must first be architected correctly in order to facilitate network layer security, but then an extremely highly skilled network security architect must device, implement, and maintain a network layer security solution in order to achieve efficacy. This is true of any network layer security solution. Few people worldwide have that skill. However, WatchGuard technologies when implemented and supported by a qualified partner are able to deliver that solution very cost-effectively to the SMB space. No other solution can achieve that.

In my opinion, the Palo Alto Firewall is the simplest firewall in terms of management interfaces; though it has more advanced options that apply to more advanced use cases. Configuring basic features on the firewall is nearly self-explanatory; configuring more advanced features can be met with very thorough vendor documentation.

The WatchGuard Network Security provide a web interface or a client interface, no matter what you approach is but you have two full powerful instrument to manage the firewall with easy interface (web) or with strong security (client). We prefer the usage with client but in fast change can be done in the web interface in a zip

We've run into a couple undocumented bugs, but that seems to happen with every brand and technology. Any time we've had to engage Palo Alto support they've always been professional, knowledgeable and prompt. In almost all cases we've been able to resolve our issues without having to escalate our tickets.

I give this rating as a result of almost 20 years of interfacing with WatchGuard technical support. Of all my vendors that I have to deal with WatchGuard is one of the best I have ever dealt with bar none. I have seldom finished a call to them without a solution. If they by chance don't have the solution, they will figure it out and get back to you ASAP as well as update the casefile online. Technical support is available via phone and web portal. It takes a few minutes to create a case online, assign a priority and submit. They get back to you depending on the critical nature of the issue, but you can expect urgent attention for critical and catastrophic issues.

We participate to a in person training and the three days of learning was really useful and complete to gain skill to solve the major part of the problem we encounter during our life. And more the in person training give us the opportunity to create a network with other WatchGuard partner.

The training videos are so helpful. They cover all of the aspects of the devices. The cloud is very nice in providing easy-to-access information regarding the health of the devices. I use the cloud for quick access and the PC application for more hands-on access and updates.

No one can say any other companies in this time is better than Palo Alto Networks Next-Generatoin Firewalls. Palo Alto offers very advanced features which protect you[r] organization. Advanced malware protection, anti spam, lots of other threats.

WatchGuard Network Security

We appreciate the WatchGuard Network Security approach to multilevel security with a layered stack. We believe that using multiple vendors' products does not lock WatchGuard into a single mindset when providing security. Over the years WatchGuard has changed some of its constituent vendors to provide better protection at the time. WatchGuard supplies a full stack security offering that is speedy in operation at any pricepoint compared to its competitors.

Return on Investment

Next-Generation Firewalls - PA Series

  • Overall, even though the device is very expensive (both hardware and licensing), the product does produce a decent ROI, given that one (or HA pair) of devices can do so many things, such as anti-virus, anti-malware, URL filtering, SSL decryption, SSL VPN, routing, etc.
  • There will definitely be sticker shock when you're renewal comes up annually (or after 3 years), so be sure to look very carefully at the recurring costs of this product, with respect to licensing and hardware/software maintenance.

WatchGuard Network Security

  • Once deployed the firewall just works
  • We had one that failed, and because it was covered, we got a replacement the following day.
  • The firmware update process takes less time, and it doesn't impact the business at all. We always update our out-of-hours, and we have never had issues.
