SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (BI) Platform

One of the things I like about BusinessObjects is that, as a BI manager, I can help varying levels of users. For example, if I have a user that has no interest/technical skill, I can build up a universe, create an InfoSpace, and design some view sets. If the user is more advanced, maybe I just need to build the universe and let them play with the view sets. Users can insert themselves in the BI process where they feel comfortable.
I dislike that there has traditionally not been a good method of restoring a single item when a user accidentally over-engineers it or deletes it altogether. And until recently, there hasn't been any kind of versioning. If there is much customization of the environment, it takes a little more effort to upgrade an existing environment or stage a new one.

Pros

SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (BI) Platform

  • This software is easy to initially learn, and very powerful in producing reusable reports.
  • It is much faster than my company's internal manual queries. The ability to build off of a saved query and share queries to other users is a great positive.
  • My favorite part is that you can run queries in the background and it does not interfere with your current work or slow your computer down.

Cons

SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (BI) Platform

  • The Platform Search tool can be troublesome to establish in a clustered deployment.
  • Issues that are repaired in on release, should not resurface in a future release. This is rare but annoying when it occurs.
  • Some of the developer tools require more documentation that what is provided.

After the initial investment, the renewal for support and new releases is extremely reasonable. Our entire reporting platform is built around SAP BO, all of our data leads to those servers, our clients are happy and we are looking to upgrade in the next six months to take advantage of its mobile reporting platform, so of course we are going to renew!

When it is deployed properly the system is very stable and consistent in its response times. The way the product is designed the data sources it connects to and the bandwidth of the network its on can be the main performance inhibitors. Addressing these two factors can greatly increase performance overall. Integration with third party tools requires strict adherence to SAP specifications. When they are followed there is no performance degradation.

Choosing the right personnel to deploy and maintain the system is critical to success. Do not underestimate the value of a sandbox and or Development environment. Every aspect of the initial deployment and subsequent upgrade and enhancements should be thoroughly tested by the developers and administrators for expected functionality and compatibility with all interfaces. A Test environment is just as crucial. Initial key user content testing and formal performance testing should take place here prior to the production deployment. This is also where you finalize your operational support plans and system/user security

Alternatives Considered

SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (BI) Platform

We selected SAP Business Objects in the previous instance because we were implementing SAP ERP and the choice of Business Objects was favorable from an integration and cost perspective. We did not choose SAP Business Objects most recently because of the predicted long implementation times, high cost (without SAP ERP), myriad of required tools, complex security model, difficulty in customizing, and lack of functionality for our specific industry. We felt that Business Objects would thrive more in a typical manufacturing company. In my opinion, Business Objects stacks up very well against "like competitors". This would include IBM Cognos, Microsoft BI, Oracle (Hyperion and OBIEE), etc. I don't think it compares favorably to the more agile, cutting-edge, and economical leaders in the BI space. This would include TIBCO Spotfire, Tableau, QlikView, Si Sense, etc.

Return on Investment

SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (BI) Platform

  • Business Objects allows me to pull data quickly when I am in a time crunch, for example, I was able to pull together a presentation for a last-minute board meeting to discuss financial objectives for the upcoming fiscal year
  • Business Objects data is used in identifying items that should be discontinued due to low sales volume or low margins
  • Business Objects data is used to analyze customer and brand performance and identify areas of success that can be translated to other customers, or areas that could be improved.
