SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (BI) Platform

Use it anywhere where scalability and performance are required, especially if newer SAP version has been implemented. The mode users will use it, the better - otherwise, the pricing policy could spoil the ROI. Very good integration possibilities, with other standard enterprise applications. Support of various data resources, incl. XML, OLAP etc. including the ability to connect to JAVA, MS Sharepoint, MS Office and .NET applications. The programmer community around SAP BO is HUGE. It is quite certain, that the problem you have has already been solved by someone else. It requires a little digging in discussions, but the help is mostly available. You definitely cannot start small with SAP BO. It feels too costly,

Cons

  • The Platform Search tool can be troublesome to establish in a clustered deployment.

  • Some of the developer tools require more documentation that what is provided.

We are currently evaluating other reporting tools to see if they can satisfy our business needs and if it's a better long term solution. Price and long term costs will be a major factor in the decision.

When it is deployed properly the system is very stable and consistent in its response times. The way the product is designed the data sources it connects to and the bandwidth of the network its on can be the main performance inhibitors. Addressing these two factors can greatly increase performance overall. Integration with third party tools requires strict adherence to SAP specifications. When they are followed there is no performance degradation.

Very difficult website to use that is not very intuitive. It's hard to reach a good support person that can actually help with the issue. We usually end up solving the issue ourselves.

Choosing the right personnel to deploy and maintain the system is critical to success. Do not underestimate the value of a sandbox and or Development environment. Every aspect of the initial deployment and subsequent upgrade and enhancements should be thoroughly tested by the developers and administrators for expected functionality and compatibility with all interfaces. A Test environment is just as crucial. Initial key user content testing and formal performance testing should take place here prior to the production deployment. This is also where you finalize your operational support plans and system/user security

Collaboration and Sharing

I do not have experience in sharing data across teams within SAP. I normally export my data to Excel and after I make the analysis then I share with the different teams. I think SAP is difficult for the non-tech users. Plus, not everyone has the same access. It's also difficult to figure out which access you need until you actual try to run certain reports and realize you don't have access.

Return on Investment

  • By generating and distributing reports in a timely manner, we were able to save millions of dollars for the company which otherwise would not have been visible.
  • Almost realtime dashboard, saved the company a huge amount by showing the outages and kept the company from buying a tool to do just that.
  • It showed the customers who were not paying the bills and were missing in the system due to some loophole. This was visible by doing reporting on the theft usage of electricity.
