What is Hotjar?

Hotjar is a conversion rate optimization tool for digital marketers. Features include heatmapping, visual session recording, conversion funnel analytics, form analytics, feedback polls and surveys, and usability testing. The tool is used by digital analysts, UX designers, web developers and product marketers. Hotjar was acquired by Contentsquare September 2021, and is now a Contentsquare brand.

Great tool to track platform usage.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We used Hotjar to track the number of users logging into our platform and how they used it. It was beneficial to see how they were using the platform so that we could make changes to it, clarify things where needed, and improve the user experience.

Pros

  • Provides insights on platform usage.
  • Provides recordings of user sessions.

Cons

  • I felt like the features in the highest-paid tier were not super useful (It might've just been our use case, though).

Return on Investment

  • We helped show users how to use our tool so that we could find strategies to increase usage as needed.
  • Helped improve our platform by finding bugs/other changes needed.

Amazing tool to understand usability of your website or app

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Hotjar to analyze the performance of our website. We use the clickmaps and scrollmaps to understand whether our layout is intuitive and easy to navigate and to see if the most important parts of the website are being seen or interacted with by visitors. It's also easy to find metrics like bounce rates which aren't easily found in Google Analytics

Pros

  • Easy to use. The platform is intuitive and you can easily set it up
  • Easy to understand analytics. The metrics aren't hidden under layers of menus, you can easily find what you need
  • Sessions recordings. It's great to see session recordings in detail, and I also love the timestamps on the session timeline

Cons

  • Some use cases are not obvious like why you would "save" recordings or heatmaps
  • The automatic screenshots are not always accurate
  • Would like if they had more guidance/ resources for how to make the best of the platform

Return on Investment

  • Reduced bounce rates on website
  • Increased user experience on our website
  • Optimised website conversions

Hotjar is KING!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Hotjar mainly for post-release validation to validate experiments and features. We mainly use the recordings and survey features. For the recordings: We monitor the users' actions and measure them against expected actions to know how our features are used. For the surveys: We usually use the widget as well as the survey features as well.

Pros

  • Recordings
  • Surveys
  • Feedback widgets

Cons

  • The filtering of the recordings can be done better

Return on Investment

  • Improving the experimentation culture in the company
  • Improving the features incrementally

Hotjar sits above its competitors with an easy-to-use and robust feature set!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Hotjar is used with the purpose of collecting continual user feedback, which is important for any product to listen to the user's voice, especially to pain points. This capture of user sentiment over time, in recurring surveys or video recordings, is crucial for teammates who work in product, design, or engineering to make decisions on how to innovate their product for a better user experience.

Pros

  • Remove assumptions by providing in the moment, contextual insights.
  • Tracks user sentiment over time.
  • Ability to quickly and easily launch an intercept survey.
  • Link up hotjar recordings to a particular a/b experiment or event trigger for specific feedback.

Cons

  • Difficult to troubleshoot Hotjar issues since there is no line to call.
  • Limited plan tiers restrict the number of recordings available.
  • Multiple workspaces can be created for one website which can be redundant.

Most Important Features

  • Video recordings.
  • Intercept surveys, especially on mobile.
  • Summaries on rage clicking or other outliers.

Return on Investment

  • Difficulty in troubleshooting issues without a customer care line.
  • Over-reliance on hotjar recordings rather than soliciting dedicated research on a feature.
  • Time-consuming to parse through so many user videos.

Hotjar Review

Pros

  • There's a lot of filtering capabilities within session recordings, which allows you to be able to find videos/users who meet your needs.
  • It is an easy product to be able to use in terms of navigation/UI.
  • The support team always seems to be on hand to provide any assistance and support.

Cons

  • There should be capabilities to do numerous session recordings on different areas of the site at once.
  • Other tools I have used in the past (Decibel Insight) had the ability to automatically set up heatmaps on all of the pages - which would be good if it could be done on Hotjar.

Return on Investment

  • Helped to information from testing roadmaps. With the data, we were then able to improve conversion rates for clients.
