Use Cases and Deployment Scope
Three specific use cases:
1. To back up the handful of old-school physical Windows servers we still have in a couple of remote offices.
2. To back up a VM that requires a user friendly GUI for single file restores.
3. To back up AD to allow for Veeam's granular recovery of AD objects.
Pros and Cons
  • Relatively speedy backups for a traditional backup solution
  • Good efficiency solutions used to shrink backup sizes
  • Robust synchronization capabilities for offsite backups
  • Veeam can perform a full metal restore of a physical server
  • If needed, Veeam can convert a backup of a physical server to a virtual server
  • Veeam could use more flexible job scheduling options
  • The Veeam Backup and Replication GUI is good but could be simplified
  • Veeam Support can be a bit slow at resolving some issues
Likelihood to Recommend
Veeam is our top-tier solution for backing up a handful of old-school physical Windows servers, and it is very good at this. It is also top notch in user-friendly granular file restores and application specific object restores (AD, SQL, etc).

Alternatives Considered
Veeam is vastly superior. It was the product we vetted and switched to from Cloudberry. CB can perform adequate backups but restores can be challenging and there are a lot of missing features compared to Veeam.
