Overall Satisfaction with Arcserve Backup

We use Arcserve Backup UDP for our primary image based backup and data protection solution. We use Arcserve Cloud Direct as our secondary offsite cloud backup solution.

Pros

  • Arcserve Backup has many offerings to fit many business sizes and needs.
  • It offers excellent features like dedupe, high availability, DR, and BMR.
  • Arcserve Backup sales and technical support is good to work with.
  • Very nice reseller program and benefits.

Cons

  • Arcserve Backup can be costly.
  • To utilize Arcserve Backup and all its features may require a layout of dedicated equipment or additional infrastructure.
  • They don't always explain that for Arcserve Backup to work well, and it requires specific system requirements and extensive internet bandwidth.
  • Arcserve Backup has had a positive impact on ROI, as a reseller we are able to build in a healthy profit margin by reselling the product and services.
  • Some of our company managed services are based upon clients running Arcserve Backup.
  • Data recovery and system recovery times have reduced over product upgrades and enhancements, causing much less downtime.
Both have similar feature sets. Unitrends seems to have a set number of configuration options for each environment and lays those templates down, whereas Arcserve Backup is more hands off with the initial backup configuration and do not have a basic SQL Template, for example. So Unitrends appears to be easier to get up and running out of the box.
Arcserve Backup support is usually very good. Their chat is usually able to fix most general issues, but will escalate more in depth issues to technical engineers that call you back. Their product knowledge is really good and usually resolve issues promptly.

For small, medium or large size businesses, Arcserve Backup offers lots of rich features for the price and depending on configuration can provide everything from basic backups to full-scale data management, protection, and fast recovery. BMR features allow for quicker recovery of windows servers and workstations. Having cloud-based storage options allows for Arcserve Backup to cover local, offsite and DR backup scenarios.

4 - All four techs in our support department use Arcserve Backup internally as well as support it for many of our clients.
2 - Previous knowledge of backups, data protection, and recovery solutions is not required but recommended for using and supporting Arcserve Backup. Advanced technicians, technical engineers, or other type of level 2 or higher technical support person would be the ideal person to manage and support Arcserve Backup.
  • Arcserve Backup is used for our daily backups and data protection.
  • Arcserve Backup is used for all servers and critical WS protection\BMR.
  • We use and resell the Cloud Direct version of Arcserve Backup for offsite and cloud storage backup options.
  • We have been able to recover WSs with failed hard drives using the BMR feature and recovered WS back to a date in time.
  • Utilizing both Arcserve UDP and Cloud Direct for a full DR solution.
  • Using free workstation edition for one-off WSs.
  • We could have images of server OS builds that could be stamped down using Arcserve Backup.
  • Utilizing Cloud Direct more for remote locations and users.
We have used Arcserve Backup for over 20 years and they have been a solid product that does backups well. Product offers rich features and a wide array of offerings to accommodate most business sizes and budgets. Arcserve Backup partner and support groups have been very good and helpful to work with.
