Overall Satisfaction with Avalara

It is used by the Accounting department and Ecommerce department. The Accounting department uses AvaTax returns to file sales tax returns. The Ecommerce department uses AvaTax to configure transactions from Magento. However, the Ecommerce department rarely logs in to Avalara. They usually only log in to Magento. The Accounting department will do the reconciliation to make sure transactions are configured to AvaTax and to Magento.

Pros

  • Takes away the hassle of filing sales tax returns
  • Provides useful reports
  • Easy to access E-commerce transactions

Cons

  • The account manager can be more helpful. Our new account manager still hasn't replied to our email requesting a link to her calendar to schedule a meeting after two follow up emails. She was not at the Crush conference either. We didn't get a chance to talk to her after she became our account manager.
  • The billing department can do better. We just got an invoice in May for overages in January.
  • Filing sales and use tax used to take about 80 hours a month.
  • Now it takes about 8-10 hours a month.
It saved us a lot of time in filing sales tax.
  • We are not using exemption certificate management because we are a retailer, not a wholesaler. We need to get the exemption certificate while the customer is in the store. Thus, doing it in Avalara online is not the most efficient way.
Do not have experiences using other products like Avalara.
It is well suited for a business that needs to be registered in more than 15 states.

  • Running transactions report, especially after the AvaTax upgrade in 2019. Before there was a 1000 transaction limit for each report. After the upgrade you can run the report for as many transactions as you like.
  • Importing transactions - drag and drop.
  • Checking the return details in admin console. It would be nice if everything can expand and collapse on one page, instead of taking me to another page when I try to see the return details (adjustments ect.)

Integrating Avalara
