Overall Satisfaction with Avalara

We use Avalara as our tax engine to calculate both US state sales taxes and Canada GST. Avalara is connected to both our accounting system and to our customer facing website so that we can charge customers the correct amount of sales tax on the front end and take care of use taxes on the back end.

Pros

  • Stays up to date with sales tax rate changes.
  • Provides easy to run reports.
  • Makes exporting data very easy.

Cons

  • The way billing is done can at times be confusing.
  • More flexibility in choosing transaction tiers.
  • Real-time transaction counts.
  • Avalara takes the place of a full time sales tax staff.
  • Avalara has saved us significant time in sales tax audits.
  • Avalara was much cheaper than a big firm that quoted us to do sales tax.

  • WOO Commerce
With the help of Avalara, we were able to make all three of these integrations without too much difficulty.
The Avalara website is very intuitive. I can usually log right in and find what I am looking for without needing to do much research or without calling Avalara for help. When I am looking for data, I have been able to easily create any report that I need in a matter of minutes. Or when I need to research a specific transaction, I simply click on it to get all the details I need to figure out what is going on.
Avalara Returns.

We do not use any other services besides the Avatax calculator. We did use Avalara returns and certcaputere for a time, but do to changes in our process we no longer use these services. When we did use these features they worked just fine for our needs, and were easy to use.

Avalara is well-suited for larger businesses that have complex sales tax arrangements, such as nexus in several states or even countries. It is also well-suited for companies that have multiple platforms that need sales tax integrated together, such as online stores and accounting systems. Avalara may not be necessary for very small businesses that can use the free sales tax solutions that come free with many online sales platforms.
