Great Product and Easy to Use
Overall Satisfaction with Avalara
We are using AvaTax with several of my companies both fully integrated and some we use uploaded spreadsheets to calculate tax. We also use ECM for our certificate management.
Pros
- Good Products- Both AvaTax and ECM are really good software products.
- Connection between AvaTax and ECM is great.
- There interface is very user friendly for both tax users and nontax users alike
Cons
- Having a direct person to work with for AvaTax returns would be helpful. Right now I have to call support and explain everything each time over and over again.
- I would like if all billing was available online to view and pay. If you use professional services the bills don't come through website.
- I have several accounts between CertCapture and AvaTax and I have tried to get my account information (contact and address) updated but it hasn't been updated everywhere.
- The biggest issue I had with Returns is the lack of flexibility with the process. My company is always changing and that means sometimes I have last minute changes and Avalara doesn't allow for that. Another issue I had with the returns process is regarding non-registered amounts. Right now there is no report that will tell me how much I have charged over the time it takes me to get registered. I have to pull up each month to find total amount.
- Allowed us to become compliant with states after the Wayfair decision
- Allowed us to cut down on manually created reports for compliance process
- Oracle Cloud
- Info Visual
- EPICOR 9
- Netsuite
- AX2012
Each systems integrations are different level of difficulty to implement. Usually the more complex the ERP system the more complex the tax system implementation.
- CertCapture
I really like using CertCapture the fact that they are connected directly to AvaTax is great. I like all the features the programs offers it allows us to manage our complex tax certificates. We are also able to use the tools to collect and keep our certificates up to date on a regular basis.
I think what is good about AvaTax is the interface is easier to work with if you are a non-IT person. Not all products are as easy to use. Another good thing is the low cost of implementation. Other tax systems are not as affordable as Avalara products. The interfaces are also more tailored to IT users.

Avalara Implementation
- Third-party professional services
I partnered with DuCharme, McMillen &
Associates, Inc or DMA for my Oracle Cloud implementation work. I also worked with Appknit the Avalara partner for this implementation. This was an overall implementation of Oracle Cloud ERP and Avalara so we also had an overall implementation partner of PWC for our bigger project.

Yes - We are still in implementation we have broken it into phases. We have completed two phases to date which includes three operating entities and our corporate entity. We are working to reorganize and future phases will be smaller and only include on site each phase to help keep work load manageable. Our next phase will include Canada a new country.
Change management was a big part of the implementation and was well-handled - It is very important to keep good documentation thru out the implementation. It can be very easy to forget what you did in the middle of an implementation and this means it can be hard to support production issues. It's also important to be able to full train all users who may not have been involved in the implementation project
- Not enough end to end testing
- Connection to other third party system that interact with Avalara
- Good data being entered into the system
Integrating Avalara
- EPICOR 10
Yes Avalara does support a EPICOR 10 implementation with Avalara AvaTax and Avalara ECM.
- API (e.g. SOAP or REST)
None that i can think of
I would make sure you have a great implementation partner both external and internal. You need to make sure you implementation needs to be comprehensive and includes enough end to end testing so you are testing all the situations that will take place in real life. It's important to make sure all your setups are complete.
- Great Plains
- SalesForce
I have only done one full integration and the rest of my companies were already using AvaTax so i have just update the current setup.
