Overall Satisfaction with Barracuda Email Security Gateway

We use Barracuda Email Security as our primary SEG inside of our organization, as well as using their impersonation protection service to warn users of possible advanced phishing and impersonation emails coming to their inbox. We primarily use Barracuda to stop spam, malware, and phishing emails that are coming to our users, as well as get accurate counts on email flow and traffic.

Cons

  • Should be easier to use
  • Needs to implement SSO support.
  • Complicated setup
  • Support should be easier to reach
  • Lack of SSO support has made us weary of trusting the products security features.
  • Most features are sold in modules, basic ESS is lackluster.
  • We have seen a vast increase in false positives and undetected malicious emails in our environment over time with Barracuda.
Barracuda was selected purely on a need and cost basis during the course our selection for an SEG. We needed a tool that could be set up fairly quickly and block and detect against spam and malicious emails. It did not compare in efficacy or ease of use to Mimecast, however it was chosen due to being a more effective price and having similar features.

Barracuda Email Security is a great tool for a small organization looking to implement a basic SEG on top of their traditional O365 or Exchange server. It works both in the cloud and on prem. However once you reach a substantial amount of users (more than 500) it becomes complex to manage, lots of false positives occur, and too many malicious emails slip by.

Overall great for the start of your org when you need something that "does the job" but not good when you need to cover a lot of users with substantial email traffic.
