Overall Satisfaction with D&B Hoovers

I primarily use D&B Hoovers to fill out the sales pipeline or acquisition pipeline. The search function allows you look up companies based on parameters like location or industry. I frequently use the industry code to find companies similar to one I already know. Primary users of the product include sales and research.

Pros

  • Find Similar Companies
  • Find other locations or families of companies
  • Company details and contact information

Cons

  • I'd prefer if the company size estimates were omitted when there is no data behind it to work off of
  • I've never heard from an account rep
  • Training resources? These could already exist but just connecting the dots to them for user would be helpful
  • It helped us find dozens per territory of new customers in a very mature markets
  • It helps us find acquisition targets in industries or product areas where we don't know much
PitchBook has richer financial details which I am typically more interested in. D&B Hoovers search functionality is usually a little more reliable and the total size of database appears much much larger. I'd say PitchBook goes an inch wide and a mile deep, whereas D&B Hoovers goes an inch deep and a mile wide.

D&B Hoovers is excellent for when you need to find companies that meet certain parameters. It is great at telling you in a neat, summarized way about contact or location information. It is not great at giving you a scope or scale of the company. That typically requires a little due diligence checking against other sources.
