Overall Satisfaction with Dropbox

Our organization uses Dropbox to organize our pipeline's media, such as assets, shot media, scripts, and deliverables, in order to maintain a home base that's central to our group's needs. We utilize it as a remote server, if you will, making sure that our artists have a repository to upload their work so that our leadership is allowed to download and review it at the time of delivery. Lots of link-sharing ensues as a result.

Pros

  • File structure organization.
  • Folder creation and control.
  • Collaboration of links.
  • Password protected media.

Cons

  • Shareability between other peers so it doesnt use the recipients storage quota.
  • It would be great to allow screen draw overs on top of images or movies.
  • Integrating with social media for immediate uploads to and from would be great.
  • The ability to go back to legacy files and search for them.
  • The amount of space it provides is great.
  • The ability to continually be a reliable product that shows constant improvement.
Overall, my experience with Dropbox is great, but it lacks in a few areas. The main one is the sharing of users. Its protocols are that if you share Dropbox with someone else, their local storage is what's used instead of the storage from the person sharing the folder or directory. It may be that the sharing protocols are not described or differentiated well enough, but I continually see this issue come up again. Right now, my showrunner shared the directory with me as an admin. To upload media, I have to have one window open to upload media, and then I have to have my regular Dropbox window open to share links. This makes this process very tedious and counterproductive.
Google Drive is not as user-friendly as Dropbox in terms of the shareability of media and its speed and ability to give you certain file details. I also tried to include box.com in the list above, but it didn't find it. Box used to be better than Drobox by a lot, but I think they have dropped a bit when it comes to keeping up with the changing times.

Do you think Dropbox delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with Dropbox's feature set?

Yes

Did Dropbox live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of Dropbox go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Dropbox again?

Yes

Recently, we recommended using Dropbox to an aspiring showrunner because he needed a central hub to share all the media amongst his growing team of artists. After looking at all our options (box, google, dropbox), We collectively decided that Dropbox was the better candidate because it suited the needs of the showrunner.
