Overall Satisfaction with Dropbox

I use Dropbox to sync all my research data on cloud. The best part of it is collaboration with my coauthors. Earlier I used to send selected files over email and had to use versioning system for every email. Using cloud eases the work by avoiding versioning every single file. I rather save only the files relevant to future. Dropbox saves the intermediate changes by itself in history which is good enough for short term requirements.

Pros

  • Save local disk space
  • Collaborate with coauthors
  • No versioning system required

Cons

  • Show the old and new file comparison
  • Do not count storage space of all the account holders, only the primary creator of folder should be responsible for storage
  • Allowing multiple accounts (work, personal, etc) in the app
  • Costlier to have two people paying for same file storage
  • Must allow personal and work account on same computer
  • Do not allow every single activity to collaborator
Overall, Dropbox provides a great cloud storage solution. I like that it maintains the history of files and folders in default at least for short term with the plus plan. I would have loved special pricing for educators. Further I would love to avoid penalizing multiple contributor for a project where some members will only be viewing files and editing is only done by one person. Probably Dropbox should charge only the folder owner who is ready to take responsibility of storage.
I hate the poor syncing of Google Drive. It unnecessarily create duplicate files or slows down syncing unless you are editing file on cloud itself. Though their photo and video backup options are great as I can use search to find pictures. Dropbox is great for professional use compare to Google Driver for personal use.

Do you think Dropbox delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Dropbox's feature set?

No

Did Dropbox live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Dropbox go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Dropbox again?

Yes

The world is moving to all cloud based solutions. It is easier to share the link in different app rather than uploading the files. Dropbox provides that flexibility while avoiding duplication of files.
The only part I didn't like is that double counting of storage by both owner and acceptor. I do not want my students to spend their storage space for our data. I can be primary holder and allow them to contribute.
