Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Power BI

In my organization we use Microsoft Power BI to solve business problems. Microsoft Power BI is a great tool for visualizing insights into critical business data for quick decision making. Microsoft Power BI taps into multiple data sources with the ability to restrict access to data based on users identity. Row level security allows for the gradual control of what users can access. We also get insights into IoT devices by streaming telemetry data into a database and then connecting with Microsoft Power BI to create reports and dashboards.

Pros

  • Microsoft Power BI is very good for connecting to multiple different data sources. It is especially good for connecting with multiple Microsoft products for example, Excel, SharePoint, MS SQL, etc.
  • Microsoft Power BI is probably one of the best dashboarding tools. The dashboard can be very interactive. For example, a user can filter to specific data based on the information they want displayed.
  • Scheduling report refreshes is another thing that Microsoft Power BI does very well. Data in report and dashboards stays updated with automatic scheduled refreshes.

Cons

  • The biggest thing about Microsoft Power BI that is somewhat challenging is that there is a bit of a learning curve as the query language is a little different from standard SQL.
  • Developing governance around the use of Microsoft Power BI in an enterprise can be difficult. You need to have people with the right skill set and the right stakeholders for governance to be effective.
  • The management of Microsoft Power BI can be challenging at times because when there is a failed job the messages are not clear and to the point so that you can track down and resolve the issue quickly.
  • Microsoft Power BI has been adopted by many business users in my organization. It integrates well with the Microsoft stack that a lot of our users and therefore the integration is easy. It also delivers beautiful dashboards with high insightful data that the business depends on.
  • Data reuse is another great benefit for us with the use of Microsoft Power BI. Once a dataset has been brought into Microsoft Power BI other users can consume the data reducing the time to source the same data.
Besides the learning curve Microsoft Power BI satisfies a number of use cases. For example, creating embedded report on a website. Users don’t need to learn complex JavaScript to design embedded reports and dashboards on the website while making sure it is sure.
Microsoft Power BI is more flexible and can also handle more complex reporting scenarios. While Microsoft Excel is a great tool for analyzing data building visuals is not what it is made for. It is complicated to create Excel reports that will be interactive as a use wants to change the data they want to view.
