Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Power BI

Microsoft Power BI is a powerful and flexible tool for data storytelling: visualising enterprise data to help users of all levels monitor, understand, and act on data and KPIs in a relevant way. Primarily, our organisation uses Microsoft Power BI to visualise Commercial data, drilling down through Product and Customer categories, and monitoring across internal business units and brands. Dynamic cross-filtering and mobile access make this a powerful tool for all teams who have involvement in Commercial processes.

Pros

  • Visualise data
  • Focus users on comparisons and KPIs
  • Enable consistent look and feel between reports
  • Allow controlled export for meetings with third parties

Cons

  • Quick to get started but steep learning curve to gain proficiency
  • Poor handling of data modelling: any change triggers full reload
  • Colours and theming is not intuitive, and much can only be done programmatically
  • Can't easily disable or control certain sharing, commenting, and self-service options
  • Data visibility allows sales reps to target effective products for selling
  • Up-to-date KPI management allows more effective resource allocation
  • Role-based access and shared datasets allow easy access governance
I think core features are generally easy to use, and most things function very consistently. It is easy to get up and running quickly when building reports. However, in my opinion, some things are made *too* flexible, especially for end-users, often with an all-or-nothing approach (either the end-user has access to all these features, or none of them). New users can easily get lost when trying to consume reports, since the app and web interface cannot be customised / unused features cannot be hidden. Good efforts recently to provide more granular access to enable/disable certain individual features or interactions, but, in my experience, these settings are inconsistent, are not always easy to find, and sometimes must be done in counterintuitive places, e.g. online settings after publication to the Microsoft Power BI service.

Do you think Microsoft Power BI delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Microsoft Power BI's feature set?

Yes

Did Microsoft Power BI live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of Microsoft Power BI go as expected?

No

Would you buy Microsoft Power BI again?

Yes

I think Microsoft Power BI is perfectly suited when seeking to visualise an existing data model that requires little to no adjustment. It offers good semi-self-service capabilities within the context of a dashboard, so users can interrogate well-modelled data themselves while having a baseline report provided to them.

In my opinion, Microsoft Power BI is not the best option when data needs significant enhancement or re-modelling. Although it is possible and can be fairly straightforward to import data from different sources, in my experience, transformation steps are inefficient and incremental loads are not possible -- you will be pushed to Microsoft Fabric at a significantly higher cost when looking for enhanced data modelling.
