Overall Satisfaction with Miro

I used Miro in a brainstorming session in a worldwide group meeting of HP employees interested in sustainability solutions. I also used Miro in a department-wide series of presentations that required brainstorming on Customer Experiences. The first instance was hugely successful. We met for several hours and reach many milestone moments. The second instance was very different. The participants expressed reluctance to use Miro and in 3 out of 4 sessions the presenters were pressured to use zoom chat for decision-making commentary. The participants are very busy and were not able to participate on their own in the "Learning Miro at your own pace" instructions and also did not create their own Miro account.

Pros

  • I love the live interaction during ideation with sticky notes. We were given instructions and told to write our own ideas which would be voted on later on.
  • I like that everyone gets a copy of the board in the end. This was crucial because we were trying to act upon the ideas that we came up with in the sessions.
  • I like how Miro presentations can be created ahead of time and adapted collaboratively during the actual presentations.

Cons

  • The learning curve turned out to be a big deal with my second group. We were able to arrive at functional conclusions using zoom chat.
  • There was a definite age difference between my first group and second group. The first group was younger, and the second group was older. But to be fair, I don't think age was the issue. I think people who have been around for a while have also been told they need to learn new software much more than the younger folks. There was the idea that taking them away from the customer to learn a new software product is time that they could have been devoting to the customer. In fairness to the first group, they had more people who are lifelong dynamic learners.
  • I would like to see more training options for moderators with difficult attendees and mixed learning levels.
  • HP wanted to know what ideas employees had regarding sustainability. A meeting invite was sent out company-wide and the result was participants from many different countries at one time. HP was able to get many ideas and move on those ideas. I don't have a measurement. It is early for me to come up with numbers. I just know that I am a believer in the power of Miro.
  • I think that Miro needs to be utilized more especially since we are post pandemic and many now work from home.
Be cognizant of participants that are voluntarily participating. Also, promote the learning curve by appealing to "growth mindset" people vs. "fixed mindset" people. Promote the idea that everyone is seen and heard during Miro collaboration. Promote the fun aspects of the software like the sticky notes/colors/stickers etc.
integration with other collaborative products is ok, but then people may ask why do we need Miro?
Miro is really impactful for collaborating on solutions worldwide.

In Zoom and Teams only one person can operate at a time. In Miro, the entire audience can be working on a problem at the same time. It is completely live. It is like a classroom where everyone is working except that everyone can see your work. :)
The presenters that were most successful had a volunteer audience and the presentations were after hours. The presenters that ran into trouble had a captive/obligatory audience and it was during working hours. I really like Miro. I hope that we (HP) can do more online collaboration sessions using Miro. As a participant, I felt seen and heard during my first sessions. I did not feel pressure from coworkers about an idea that may be viewed as bad. In other collaborative products like zoom and teams only one person can "write" or "share" at a time, but in Miro, everyone that is invited can work while listening to the presenter. That is my favorite part. The other thing I like about Miro is that you get credit for your ideas and people can actually see your cursor as you "roam" around the Miro board.
