Overall Satisfaction with Oracle Database 12c

Oracle 12c is our enterprise level database that is used in conjunction with PeopleSoft to support out ERP needs like payroll, benefits, recruitment procurement, supply chain management etc. Since both PeopleSoft and 12c are Oracle products, they integrate well together and we receive great support for it. It is used across our whole organization and across other departments for their data storage, retrieval and management needs.
  • Data management: Oracle 12c does a great job in storing, retrieving and processing data.
  • Performance Management: We make uses of features provided with in Oracle Enterprise Manager as well as SQL tuning capabilities to manage out queries and closely monitor the performance.
  • Improved support experience compared to older version.
  • Easy to upgrade and maintain when coupled with the new features and security that is delivered for the most up to date version of Oracle.
  • Increased need to manage and maintain the databases in terms of performance for our project needs. Causing an overhead for DBAs and Developers.
  • Even though Oracle 12c has been around for multiple years and supports various features that are provided by other competitors, certain features are still missing.
  • No ability to perform some advanced analytics from within the database.
  • Difficulty integrating with non-Oracle products.
  • Oracle 12c provide great support and features that are efficient in terms of memory management as well as performance making it one of the best database tools in the market to manage our data. This adds to our overall ROI by making it maintainable.
  • It is also a great tool for enterprise level applications and integrates easily with other Oracle products like PeopleSoft that we primarily use making it the best viable solution in the market for our needs.
  • Give enhanced abilities to DBAs as well as Developers to manage data, but also adds an overhead by having to keep a closer eye. Needing more resources and adding to the overall cost of maintaining and upgrading to 12c.
Not at my current employer, but previously I have evaluated and used all Microsoft SQL Server, Amazon Web Services (AWS), PostgreSQL and MySQL. All of them had their own advantages and disadvantages. SQL Server had great built in tools like SSIS and SSRS that integrated well with our reporting and data analytics needs. Amazon Web Services is a great tool for large scale data storage on the cloud with desirable features, lower maintenance costs and is a great alternative to on premise data management. PostgreSQL on the other hand is known for its ease of use and maintenance. On the other hand MySQL has now been acquired by Oracle, but is a product that is still open source and is great for web applications and building tools that do not have to be implemented at enterprise level.
If you are tied into using Oracle for your business data storage needs, it will fully recommended you use the latest and greatest version of the software. And Oracle 12c is just that. It provides amazing support, new features and functionality, better security and ability to query, improved management of indexes by means of compression, and support for new data document standards like JSON.
