Overall Satisfaction with SEMRush

As a small/medium sized online marketing and web development company, we use SEMrush in a few capacities. For clients in ongoing contracts we us it to support ongoing SEO and SEM efforts. This includes monitoring performance of KWs in both organic and paid spaces and watching for SEO issues on the site. In the development of new sites SEMrush is used to conduct baseline research for SEO.
  • Competitive landscape: SEMrush shows performance for a domain compared to both known/identified competitors and others that may not be known.
  • High level overview: It is easy to get a sense of what is happening for a business across many aspects of their domain and even in social media.
  • The Dashboard is helpful for seeing where different projects are at a glance. It is a helpful way to monitor a number of sites.
  • The reporting component is ok, but feels limited especially on formatting. It works, but we don't rely on it for client facing reports.
  • The number of projects is our biggest constraint. At higher account levels this may be less of an issue, but the number of tracked KWs will probably be limiting at that point. It has been a struggle for us to find a tool scales well with our model.
  • User accounts are very expensive. In this sense SEMrush is probably well suited to an in house team, but gets very expensive for an agency.
  • SEMrush has helped us to monitor sites for SEO issues. This has reduced our dependence on manually checking sites to identify issues.
  • We often use SEMrush to do a baseline review of a prospect site. It helps us to understand the current state of a site quickly and efficiently.
  • In terms of influencing our clients' perception of value, SEMrush is not a primary driver. It helps us work more efficiently, but we don't use it to generate reports direct to clients or heavily rely on the metrics from SEMrush to measure performance.
We have used a few similar products to SEMrush at different points. Generally the breadth of information in SEMrush is one of the biggest reasons to use it. If your focus is more specific on SEO Moz Pro might be a better choice. If you are exclusively focused on SEM/PPC it might be better to use SpyFu or another platform. But if you are looking for a balanced view of organic and paid traffic, SEMrush is a great option.
SEMrush is probably best suited to be used by a team directly managing a small set of sites for a company. It does well at tracking and monitoring a few sites with a pretty deep pool of keywords. The user structure and project layout are less well suited for an agency environment where many people are working on many sites that aren't related.
