Slack cuts the fat off of typed communication
Overall Satisfaction with Slack
Slack creates a stream of typed communication between various groups and channels. Groups could be thought of as different collectives of people that communicate for a general topic (e.g., you might join a group that focuses exclusively on WordPress and then another that focuses on Shopify). Within the groups there are also channels, which allow you to even further narrow down your focus of conversation (e.g., development, design, debugging, etc.). Easily-to-add links, attachments, and lots of third-party integrations make communication even more robust.
Pros
- Fast and friendly user interface
- Attachments are easily referenced
- Private communication and group communication
- Target other users in conversation to sent them alerts
- Useful and controllable notification options
- Third-party integrations
Cons
- Search functionality could use improvement
- Desktop alerts don't always fire
- Allowed my team to collaborate despite distance and separate time zones
- Helped us coordinate meetings and share files/screenshots
The others got discontinued, but Slack is a step beyond them anyway.
