Overall Satisfaction with Splunk IT Service Intelligence (ITSI)

My organization has used Splunk for many years however my
team just started ingesting our data. We started off small and are figuring out
what Splunk can do. Once you have the correct search results, the power is
incredible. We can see how many calls come into our network, what errors are
occurring and where exactly they are. In fact, for the first time, we used our
dashboard (which hasn't been made public to the rest of the organization yet)
to troubleshoot a possible outage. The on-call person opened the dashboard, and
we knew right away it wasn't our team’s issue. The time we saved by not
manually pulling calls from SQL, looking for errors within those calls, and
simply digging through our network to find where the issue was occurring
allowed the on-call person to immediately open a ticket with a vendor. We were
able to show when the issue started, where the issue was, and defer to the
vendor even though they had not seen the issue. If we can find this with the
little data we are ingesting, just imagine what we can do with more. The
possibilities are endless!

Pros

  • laying out dashboards to quickly see data
  • Providing a trending map to see data over time
  • Drilling down to find things you didn't even know you needed

Cons

  • I'm not sure if it's my organization locking down Splunk or Splunk itself but it would be helpful to get more detailed errors when searching. A way of guiding the correct input to get results.
  • Something like SQL IntelliSense - the feature reads internal metadata and lists all of the available objects and their properties, thereby helping people effectively and quickly write SPL.
  • Personalization for things like saving reports, datasets, dashboards of others
  • Splunk helped speed up finding the cause of an outage.
  • Sped up getting vendors involved to quickly figure out issues.
  • Drilled down in data to see our team was not the issue.
Our company uses quite a few technologies to sort, filter, and store data. My team uses only a few of these technologies however we just started using Splunk. The more we see what it can do the more I can see us phasing out these other technologies and only using Splunk. The visualizations are remarkable, easy to read, and can be modified for an individual needs. Having one engine to do the work of 4 or 5 and not lose any data is well worth the switch.
My team just started ingesting our data into Splunk (2 weeks ago). Right after ingestion was completed, we started creating dashboards to see what Splunk can do. We've already seen the greatness Splunk can do last weekend when we were on-called for an outage. The on-call person immediately started to pull calls our normal way, SQL, data compare, logging into our systems, and checking logs, a peer opened the test dashboard and immediately found the issue. It wasn't with our system but with a vendor. It would have taken the on-call person at least 45 minutes to go through everything to rule out our team as the issue. Within seconds, the dashboard was able to show what, where, when, and how bad the issue was.
After the outage started slowing down we dug into the dashboard to see trending data. As Splunk is a new technology for my team we didn't know everything that was happening within our system. After seeing the data, some of the things we thought were possible issues were in fact normal. Being able to quickly show these anomalies help get to the root of the issue with a better understanding of what is happening.
The goal of our Tech Strategy is to maximize business agility while achieving cost and quality targets. The Tech Strategy provides high-level guidance to inform decision-making related to the development and use of specific technical capabilities. It is an effective way to communicate strategic intent, encourage alignment across IT platforms, and drive the implementation and adoption of technologies and methods that support efforts to achieve our agility, cost, and quality goals. Splunk is becoming one of the major technologies to help accomplish this.
