AuthPoint MFA: A winning solution
Overall Satisfaction with WatchGuard AuthPoint
I have deployed AuthPoint for several customers: some small companies with less than 10 users and some large companies with 500+ users. Most companies deploy AuthPoint to be used for remote MuVPN access. I ave a few customers that tie this into the desktop office computers and require MFA to use their desktop. It provides these customers with logs necessary for access control.
Pros
- Most customers like the availability of OTP, Push, or QR Codes.
- They can use AuthPoint App for other tokens.
Cons
- It has all the features that I find useful and they added hardware tokens as well.
- They could change the logon app. It caused a bit of confusion when installing.
- This is a security feature that is relatively inexpensive.
- How much would it cost for 1 breach with remote access credentials? The ROI is immeasurable.
RSA, Vasco, Symantec, HID and a host of competitors offer similar products. AuthPoint is easy to use, configure, manage, and integrate with any environment. It is a multi-vendor solution that is extremely affordable. Communication with the cloud is encrypted and secure. Your DC does not talk to the cloud.
With any cloud service, you have to be concerned about security. Some people believe that the cloud is inherently "safe". It is not, that is why AuthPoint limits what is communicated from the network to the cloud. Radius talks to the Domain controller within the network, the firewall communicates with the cloud via https port 443 connection.
This is one of the reasons why it has been well accepted by the users. It is simple. Multi factor authentication without the hassle. They don't actually have to enter anything, they just touch their smart phone screen, and the phone sends the code. No typing, no mistakes, it is very easily accomplished.
Users will not know the difference, but admins do. This allows us to use long, strong, complicated passwords that would be impossible to have a user enter without errors. When a user has to attempt to enter his long, strong password, there are bound to be mistakes. This is easier for the user, and more secure for the CSO.
