Likelihood to Recommend

1Password

I use it for all my work logins, every single one of them! We manage content providers and advertiser accounts, for some sites, there are 20 logins. There are also services we only use occasionally, remembering the login details for those, or looking them up in an unsafe spreadsheet would be a nightmare. I even contemplated using it for my private logins and all my family accounts - despite having Google store them all, because Google stores them in plain text and I don't really like that

I was actually recommended this product by a colleague of mine and we have used it ever since. It is well suited for small to large IT departments that have a large number of service accounts and/or online service accounts such as Dropbox, Splashtop, Exchange, etc. For the home user, I would maybe recommend it if he/she wanted to keep track of personal accounts, numbers, recovery codes, etc. But this is mainly more for the business user.

Pros

1Password

  • 1Password's integration with services like Dropbox means that our passwords are backed up to our own accounts allowing us to set up as we go, instead of having overhead costs.
  • 1Password's real-time sync means that when a user has updated a shared password, everyone who has access to that password gets the changes right away
  • 1Password for Business allows us to see how often users use specific logins and revoke and grant access on the fly eliminating the need to remember and share passwords and also saving time!

  • Password management is great. It makes it super easy to store and view accounts if we can not remember particular login information.
  • The password generator is great as well! I like that it will generate a very unique and complex password for us.
  • It is nice to know how secure our passwords are when we add a new entry. It lets us know if we need to strengthen them.

Cons

1Password

  • There have been issues where team members have made changes to passwords and it would be helpful to know when and who made these changes.
  • The cost for our teams to use 1Password was a little steep. However, it does seem worth it for the convenience.
  • The online support/FAQ is not the most helpful place to go for answers. I have waited very long periods of time to get responses from the support team, but this is a rare occurrence.

  • Viewing of passwords is kind of clunky. Then again I might be doing it wrong to view them. I basically have to "edit" the entry then unmask the password to view it. But like I said, I might be doing it wrong.
  • The import function needs a bit of work. Importing passwords from a browser is just a mass import and it would be nice to have some more granular input.
  • Give me a dark mode!

Usability

The 1Password app design is top notch, much better than a couple other password managers I've looked at. The app and service are very flexible, allowing for many different types of data storage. The browser extensions generally work very well, allowing for easy access to login information while using pretty much any modern web browser.

I haven't had a lot of issues with 1Password in the past, but I have browsed the 1Password support forums a bit when I have needed an answer for something. The support staff seems to be very responsive. They seem to respond to pretty much everything posted in the support forums.

Alternatives Considered

1Password

I’ve used LastPass as a Chrome extension and the user interface was terrible. 1Password is more user-friendly and has a way better integration with the Apple ecosystem (they even provide an Apple Watch app).

  • We save time on finding services login information
  • It’s much easier to share that kind of information

  • Positive. All of our usernames and passwords for service accounts are in one convenient location.
  • Positive. The ability to organize everything into separate locations/folders is great.
  • Positive. Password generator makes it easy for us to generate a secure password for our accounts.
