My business works with clients from a variety of outlets, with budgets ranging from six figures down to triple digits (not kidding). There's a TON of analytical software out there, so speaking as a guy who has worked with them all (or at least quite a few) if your client is on a budget – particularly a startup – AWR is a great program to use. They've been around for a while, the desktop version is pretty bug-free and updates in real-time, and it's budget conscious.

BrightEdge

BrightEdge is very suited to reporting on your SEO campaigns. It furnishes excellent trended reports that tell accurate stories of your presence in Google SERPs and overall organic search presences. It can also give detailed recommendations to targeted pages and keywords that can use improvement and/or are easy wins. It's also strong in terms of competitive analysis with insights into your competitors' ranks. It is not as suited for technical analysis nor does it really give you a platform for launching extremely large scale SEO campaigns. It can also improve on site audits with the ability to do some of the things that other auditing tools can do.

Pros

  • It only costs $49/month, which is great for clients that are working with limited budgets (they're cost-conscious!)
  • Its ease of use – I've worked with plenty of cloud-based rank tracking programs before, and AWR was by far one of the cleanest and easiest to navigate. I could use it on my iPad and the user-touch interface was pretty seamless.
  • The info is updated in real-time. We were able to show our clients their live data while in meetings. It made us look good, and it made our clients feel better about the service they were paying for.

  • Share of Voice Analysis: We really love this feature. It gives us an opportunity to provide customers with insight to their TRUE Organic competition. More often than not, the Organic competitors are quite different from what the customer originally thought. This supports our effort to show Subject Matter Expertise on a regular basis.
  • BackLink Opportunities: This feature really tailors our link building strategy. It allows us to quickly download the gap between our customer & its competition, which provides a 'road map' for link building team. Once the gap has been closed, we re-run the opportunities and move forward with the new plan.
  • Trended Charts: In general, the trended charts are a huge advantage that BrightEdge has over other SEO platforms. I've never come across another tool or company that can provide the same level of data, over time, consistently. As SEO changes and fluctuates, these trended charts become vital to our reporting and investigations, especially when new algorithms are pushed out by Google.

Cons

  • The ability of the program to produce dashboards in web page format. While it can do this, it saves them out as HTML files on your hard drive or cloud server, which makes it super hard to share with others.
  • The cloud version is a bit more expensive, which offers the same tools as the desktop, which I found a little troublesome and it didn't make sense to me.
  • Their customer service was a little lacking. I had a couple of general questions and I was on hold for about 15 minutes...which isn't good when you're in the middle of a busy workday.

  • The SEO recommendations aren't advanced or innovative but are derived from webmaster guidelines and SEO best practices. Don't get me wrong, SEO fundamentals are essential for long term success but you would expect more out of an "enterprise" SEO platform.
  • While BrightEdge does integrate with 3rd party APIs, it is limited. For example, SiteCatalyst was integrated but very few metrics were accessible and none of the reports were interactive.
  • BrightEdge only keeps historical data for active keywords and competitors. It would be very useful to be able to archive and import historical data.

I will remain a strong advocate of BrightEdge so long as they continue to stay ahead of SEO news and trends and respond to it accordingly. Although their response to (not provided) updates needs improvement, I certainly appreciate the strides they have made to respond to the update and it shoes me they are constantly in tune with the future of SEO.

Once versed in the navigation and use of the tool it is quite manageable, but the initial training can be difficult for some users.

For the most part it was seamless. The load time of clients was a little long, but otherwise was quite easy.

Alternatives Considered

There's a ton of competition for AWR but in all honesty, if you're on a budget, I'd advise going with this one. It gets you pretty accurate results, updates their info in real time, and all for about $49/month base price. It's pretty good software for the money that you're paying

BrightEdge has been around longer and you can be trained/certified within the scope of work plus very large companies trust BrightEdge. SEMRush does a lot of the same tasks but has a little less content.

Return on Investment

  • It stayed within our client's allotted budget (which drives more business our way down the road!)
  • Updated information in real-time assures our clients that they get the most accurate information possible, as quickly as possible.
  • It's been only slightly detrimental to my workflow (which is one little drawback of the program) sometimes I have to enlist the help of a keyword generator (because i find the one with the program a bit lacking)

  • Analytic reporting made easy
  • Pivoting available with additional strategies to identify gaps
  • Allows us to manage multiple clients simultaneously
