Aha!

  • Aha! is the all around product management tool. You need something once you build out a product management role and grow beyond a small scrum team with one or two products. JIRA, Pivotal, and project management tools don't cut it for aligning [engineering] with product initiatives once the backlog starts to scale.
  • On the other hand, there are several unfinished features that my peers all admit to having to work around: Capacity Planning, Salesforce Integration, Roadmap Display Flexibility, User Feedback, etc. This year has been all about reporting in terms of feature releases. As Aha! grows, they will fill in these other areas, so stay tuned.

Trello

It is excellent for multiple groups or users with multiple activities at any one time, or for a single user wanting to have several project sections going on at any one time. It enables the user to keep things separate but all contained within a single portal, but it can become quite cumbersome relatively quickly. The bigger the organisation, the more consideration needs to be given to how exactly Trello is used to give the users the best experience, or even if multiple instances of the platform is necessary.

Pros

  • Very flexible workflows, custom fields, terminology, and interface design
  • Easy to get started with whatever elements you want to use without requiring an all in approach. For example, we started with features and releases. After we were comfortable with the product we started managing our goals and initiatives. Even later we opened an idea portal to work with the rest of our business
  • Nice clean look. Good documentation. Responsive support.

  • Several distinct areas or sections can be implemented to segregate different zones or work areas.
  • Real time updating of information and user-restricted access to each zone.
  • Easy to collaborate on different stories and sections, and easy user management.

Cons

  • Cannot sync time estimation data between aha and jira. Cannot sync feature dependencies between aha and jira. Both of these limitations exist despite both systems supporting this data and their implementations being nearly identical.
  • Keeps adding new features (with sketch, invision, etc, etc out there who the hell wanted to create mockups using aha?!?) without finishing baking those they have. Take alook at the great input on their idea portal and you'll see ideas from years ago that (a) are quite popular and (b) unfinished
  • Expensive

  • Trello is not as robust a product for the Windows environment, although the web interface is as functional as most users will need.
  • Trello does not make it easy to completely delete content. The archive function is useful but sometimes you just want to get rid of something completely.
  • Trello does note currently offer an offline editing function which would be very useful.

It does everything we need it to do to manage users and content as it progresses, but could do with more improvements too such as notifications or remote notifications. We have no reason to move for now!

The functionality is there, but it's intimidating to learn.

Trello is ridiculously simple to use. Its user interface is well designed. Buttons and labels are clear, so you can tell at glance what something means. Plus, it's easy to back out of anything if you don't like what you've done, so there is no fear of messing things up unintentionally.

Support always answered in 24 hours for any inquiry-- a reasonable timeframe for most of our requests. The PM team participated actively in supporting their features, keeping them close to the product.

For our small business, getting a few of us started well on Trello was the key, I think. As long as a couple of us were really comfortable with the interface, we could lead others and help them with any questions. From now on, anyone who works with us just naturally uses Trello for information sharing - it's just part of what we do.

Best, power-user tool for product management

Trello is just very easy to get start with and use. Asana is also a great tool, and I have used it for a while, but Trello offers more visual representation of our task management, so we decided to go with Trello. It was a good decision, as we are happy with it.

Return on Investment

  • Very helpful separating the concerns of our product and engineering teams. Both feel notably more productive working in their "own" tools (aka aha and jira)
No photo available
  • With Trello it's more clear who works on which task and where are we with product development.
  • The team is now more organized and less chaotic.
  • Everyone knows what they need to work on and when to deliver. It helps us avoid confusion.
