Amazon Chime

Amazon Chime is a superior alternative to other free video conference/conference call programs. The call and video quality are great, and you can have multiple participants on both video and call. It's well suited for an organization that wants an affordable option for video and conference calls, but may not be appropriate for organizations with limited budgets or those who do very little conferencing.

Blackboard Collaborate

Blackboard Collaborate is particularly well suited for one (or a few) speakers presenting information for a large number of more passive participants who may only interrupt for a few questions at a time. This makes it particularly well suited for a traditional education environment. It does not do well for meetings or group discussions where there may be more than 6 people who would like to be seen and heard during the session without having to constantly turn on and off their audio and video.

Pros

  • Audio and video quality is very good
  • Easy to sign on and start conversations, other tools I've used sometimes can be confusing or don't always work properly.

  • Whiteboard: Professors use this feature to explain topics by drawing some diagrams on the Whiteboard.
  • Share Documents: This feature is widely used by the professors to share their notes with the class.
  • Breakout Groups: Professor use this feature to create groups in the class for some tasks.

Cons

  • Sometimes people are confused because they don't necessarily know or understand what Amazon Chime is because they haven't heard of it. However, they trust the "Amazon" brand, so once they click and sign in, things are fine.

  • Complexity: Some non-technical professors find it difficult to use different features of Blackboard Collaborate.
  • Video Quality: Some times Blackboard Collaborate provides very poor quality videos even if there is a good internet connection.
  • Audio-Video Synchronization: In the recordings, the video does not keep up with the audio and you will sometimes see that they are out of sync.

It is a tool that faculty likes to use. It has so much flexibility to allow students to see a class even if they happen to not be available in the classroom.

Collaborate is a easy to use, easy to learn, and a well supported product. It is not overly complex yet it is quite feature rich. I think that most users (both instructors and students) should find it easy to use without much outside help.

The availability of the software is quite impressive. You can access it at any time that you want and from anywhere that you want, but that depends on how the software is set up by the University. There might be sudden outages due to not having enough space on your database, which we had that very issue happen recently here at our University. During that time, you could not access their blackboard at all until it was brought up online again.

The performance of the software is remarkable. The loading speed of the pages is more than satisfying, it all depends on the users internet package. So far, there wasn't any issue of Blackboard slowing down other software or systems when integrated with them

Alternatives Considered

AWS Chime is very comparable to Zoom meeting. Monthly costs are usually cheaper but are variable and can fluctuate. Reporting on AWS Chime is great but needs some additional back-end set-up that could be cumbersome. Overall... ease, quality, look and set-up is very easy. Equipment required, quality and cost is what makes this a great product.

The reason for this rating is that the software is a pretty good tool that can be utilized for use in all of the Universities around the world. It has the capability to fulfill the needs of various different education systems. Although, there are slight improvements that are needed, therefore the rating is at 8.

Return on Investment

  • Amazon Chime has negatively impacted our ability to perform demos and calls. Some prospects are late to calls because Chime isn't working, or they give up and don't join the call at all.
  • Amazon Chime also makes us look unprofessional when we have to ask them to download a conferencing software for screenshare meeting, when many other alternatives are web-based.

  • The positive impact of Blackboard Collaborate is that distant students can also attend classes.
  • Opens communication to outside world. For example, a professor conducts a guest lecture but somehow a guest can't be physically present in the class so he/she gives the lecture through Collaborate.
