Amazon Cloud Drive

Amazon Cloud Drive is a fantastic backup solution for storing your digital files on the web, but if you want to manage, tweak, organize or otherwise maintain those files after they have reached the cloud, the experience immediately begins to suffer. This is especially noted when major competitor products like Microsoft and Dropbox offer similar services at similar prices, but offer far better interfaces for file management.

Egnyte

Egnyte is great for working collaboratively on documents that are passed around from person to person. We use the WebEdit feature so only one person can edit the document at a time, which avoids confusion with multiple rounds of edits and is a huge help with version control. We have implemented our own detailed filing system and as long as this adheres to it, it means that there are never any missing files, or issues with finding/accessing documents when members of staff are on holiday or off sick. However, there are some documents that we still use Google Docs and Google Sheets for, as Egnyte doesn't allow multiple people to edit a document simultaneously. For collaborative work with clients, it's still very useful to be able to work on a document or spreadsheet at the same time and have instant updates, which Google services are good for.

Pros

  • Cloud, so you can access it anywhere- you just need to have an Amazon account.
  • Affordable upgrade of $11.99/month once you reach the 5GB limit.

Egnyte

  • Sharing files safely and securely with people at different facilities. It allows for ease of communication without having to limit security potential to do so.
  • Fast updating - within seconds I can drop a file in to a shared Egnyte folder and it be readily available on someone else's computer in the office. This is great for conference calls, it allows all parties to quickly access and review the same material.
  • Salesforce integration - it has been phenomenal seeing how seamlessly Egnyte and Salesforce integrate. To allow these tow systems to ebb and flow so well together saves countless hours of work in our everyday.

Cons

Amazon Cloud Drive

  • Speed. At times, does seem to have a throttling affect and can be slower. Especially on the upload side of things.
  • Notifications/alert of issues. Not really quick, or informative.

Egnyte

  • Workshops - a lot of people in our field have experienced a learning curve when implementing Egnyte. I think good workshops online would be excellent tools to allow them to reach Egnyte's full potential
  • Breaking links - If I share a confidential file, it would be excellent to easily re-access that link that was sent to that file and break that link (force it to no longer work). As it stands that often has to be done universally, and so one wrong move on our side has the potential to be catastrophic. There may be a way that I don't know about, but I think that points back to the idea of workshops
  • Varying user access - it would be nice to allow users to edit and delete only in certain parts of Egnyte, rather than giving them administrative access across the board.

Egnyte meets every one of our file-hosting needs, and has an easier overall usability than any other program I've used - There's no question about it

We can really do anything we would like within Egnyte. If we find we're missing something, we can always go through their community and suggest changes. The major thing we're missing is the collaboration option within the desktop apps. It's working online though and for now, that's enough. Once it's implemented it will be 10/10.

Egnyte works very well across all platforms and as an add-on to other programs. Load time is close to nothing. Reports can be made in no time as well. All in all no performance issues. We can see that it depends on the local network connection. If you're running with fiber there won't be any issues.

Because we did lose some files in the early stages that tech support could not recover, we lowered the support rating. With continued support, our rating would go up over time.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon Cloud Drive

It was a brand that I knew of, and pricing was attractive. Many of our other vendors use Amazon, so that gives us a greater comfort level.

Egnyte

Egnyte has a much easier management console and it's easier to share files and create a directory of files etc. The overview is more simplified. OneDrive, however, has the option to collaborate in documents in the application itself. But Egnyte should have this feature in the pipeline and it should be something we can see in the future.

Return on Investment

Amazon Cloud Drive

  • Amazon likes to provide you with one year free unlimited cloud drive in some occasions. There is not much impact on my business but provides me with fast and easy accessibility to the files from anywhere I want.

Egnyte

  • We don't spend money on printing documents and filling them, totally eliminating paper work. This has saved us a huge cost.
  • Travel Cost- it connects us locally and internationally so we really don't need to travel to other locations to access any file whatsoever.
