iCloud is really best suited for personal or home use. iCloud for Business can be done with some customization, however, it is missing some great features that some other competitors excel at. Sharing documents with those outside the organization or file restrictions and sharing can be some of its major downfalls. I would recommend using the free version of iCloud and sharing some documents around in a fashion that you might work each day before you make the switch for your company.

Pros

Apple iCloud

  • Apple iCloud integrates beautifully with the entire Apple ecosystem. Whether you are using a MacBook, iPhone, and/or iPad they will all sync at a moments notice through iCloud.
  • As a company, Apple has a strong reputation for security. Many cloud storage providers share huge amounts of user data, however, Apple prides themselves on avoiding that.
  • Even though Apple iCloud is optimized for Apple devices, data stored on the cloud can be accessed through a web browser on a computer running essentially any operating system.

Cons

Apple iCloud

  • You will constantly run into issues where iCloud is optimized or available only for Apple's own product line. That's frustrating.
  • Apple's Mail app and service are just beleaguered by the likes of Gmail. Perhaps even Zoho does better than them on the web.
  • iCloud seems optimized more for a mobile user, so desktop apps & services feel a bit force-fitted.

It's so seamless that I can't imagine another product doing a better job synchronizing all of my devices. I simply do not think about it at all. Everything happens behind the scenes and I'm confident that Apple keeps my data safe and secure. I'm a happy customer as far as this is concerned. I have not had a bad experience with this service.

While it may be great to use with other Apple products, I find it's an absolutist-style workflow to be debilitating and to lead to many problems. When you sign into the cloud, it completely takes over your device in many ways that you don't notice at first until there is a problem.

Occasionally, large files that haven't yet been synced require a few minutes to pull down but I've rarely noticed delays. It does a good job of keeping data cached on my local machines while updating them with changes from other machines transparently.

I have had to use Apple's customer support before and have been impressed with the ease and accessibility that comes with having them answer what was necessary to fix a problem and make something right. I have had multiple times where people have been helpful and understanding when necessary.

Alternatives Considered

Apple iCloud

Apple iCloud works as well or almost as well as OneDrive. I also use OneDrive fairly extensively because I have free storage and it came along with my other Microsoft software. I only pay for additional storage on iCloud. I suppose it's because I operate in both Windows and Apple computer environments it just makes it easier and more versatile for me. I used to work only on Mac devices but when it became necessary for me to use a Windows-based system, that's when I started using One Drive. My mobile devices have access to both online storage options. I don't use or need Google Drive.

Return on Investment

Apple iCloud

  • It's sped up the time spent searching for documents that are stored in the cloud.
  • It works really well for staff already in the Apple camp.
  • The staff in the Android camp aren't as happy about it and have needed a little more training and adjustment time.
