Considered Both Products
Automox
Chose Automox
I've used a number of other patching products at previous employers. Automox, while it does not have all the bells and whistles of SCCM, Tanium, or BigFix such as software self service or automated deployment through network scanning, software catalogs, or warranty check …
Chose Automox
Special thing about Automox is that it has customer deploy packages for many remote end points where as other tools listed does not have that privileges. Other tools are not user interface friendly where as Automox user interface is very easy and customizable as well. Unique …
Chose Automox
Price and ease of use of the product Automox hands down beat them. But those products also had a monitoring component to consider. But when looking at the monitoring component it wasn't intuitive and hard to implement.

Automox
On a daily basis we have to use it to remote connect to end user machines. It is not marketed as a remote connection tool near as much as a patching tool but it is honestly great at both. I can remote to an end user via the console anf resolve the issue they are experiencing .

Tanium
Tanium is well suited for organizations where enterprise infrastructure has great significance and needs to be properly managed as well as protected. Most organizations depend upon their infrastructure to sustain so Tanium can be a boon for them to sustain in this competitive market. However, Tanium is less appropriate for the traditional offices that don't have or have a less online presence.

Cons
Automox
  • It would be nice to have an option to run as logged in user with elevated permissions
  • Run as given account (not current user)
  • for some reason Automox defaults to using 32-bit PowerShell and for some reason this does not work for adding registry keys. As a work around, we have been forcing running the 64-bit powershell.exe and executing a script block. This is fine but would be better if it defaulted to 64-bit

Tanium
  • One issue is its ring topology, as the data is stored in central hubs and pushed through its peer nodes. If the central hub fails, then the associated node will also result in failure.
  • Another problem is that all Tanium management is on premises requiring the customer to maintain it. If we want ask any help from Tanium support we always get a response like "you are maintaining it yourselves and it's your responsibility.
  • The Tanium User Interface could be improved a bit as, although the tool is rich in performance, a more impressive UI might really attract new customers.

Usability
Automox
Before using Automox, I did not have any experience with a patch management system of any kind. I was able to pick up Automox and start creating policies and assigning endpoints to groups very easily. One of Automox's selling points is that it is easy to use and learn. Automox will take a large amount of time to master since there are so many things it can do. However, it is easy to pick up and get going.

In my experience, they were responsive but the fixes were more like bandaids than a fix for the underlying problems which they admitted were on their end.

Alternatives Considered
Automox
Automox is able to scale better than PDQ Deploy. We were happier with the 3rd party software patching since we have a lot of different software we use across departments. PDQ deploy required a lot more manual intervention to stay on top of deployments. Automox just ended up being a timesaver for us in the end.

Tanium is always my first choice, so much excellent feedback online from genuine users, easy to use in any system environment, and value for money, so many good things about Tanium stacks up against all the other competitors in the market. Tanium is one of the most reliable and trusted risk and compliance management software.

Return on Investment
Automox
  • We used to use a different patching solution and since switching to Automox, I have been able to cut the amount of time I spend on vulnerability management by 50% or more. I love how "set it and forget it" some of the policies can be. I love how simple it is to keep an eye on things.
