AWS Device Farm

This is the best solution I have found to trail run software before it is deployed across a large number of users and a large variety of device types. We have Windows, Mac OS, Android, and iOS devices. Android alone has a ton of OSs. This helps save time and test functionality across the board.

BrowserStack

If you have a web property that will be used by people on a variety of hardware, os and browsers, this is a must have. The ability to emulate the user's exact browser/os/device is so important. Something may work in one version of a browser, but not in a slightly different build or on a different os.

Pros

AWS Device Farm

  • 100% compatibility with the installed user base. No simulation, but real results.
  • Integration with Jenkins and other CI/CD tools.
  • A considerable amount of device types available. Again, real devices in the cloud!

BrowserStack

  • It shows a true representation of how a website will look on a mobile device.
  • BrowserStack has a good variety of devices and browsers for us to test on.
  • It's easy to access BrowserStack from anywhere that I have Internet access.
  • I can inspect my code and any errors, and also test changes on the device that I am logged into. It makes troubleshooting so much easier.

Cons

AWS Device Farm

  • Cost and price is always a concern
  • Can be a bit clunky for the staff using the service.
  • Sometimes, misses issues with iOS devices.

BrowserStack

  • It can be a challenge to use it when you're accessing it from within a corporate firewall. In my view, this is the Firewall's problem, but anything that BrowserStack can do to ease that pain will expand its ability to be useful in more locked-down companies.

It's simply a must-have tool. As a designer, I have to ensure my work is at least functional in older browsers. I also have to ensure that, when I design for mobile devices, any differences between platforms aren't problematic. BrowserStack allows me to test my work in a fraction of the time, with a whole lot more accuracy.

Usability

The users have no issue. The IT staff have learned to work with the software with the help of AWS support. I find it very effective. Could it be easier? Of course. That doesn't mean this isn't a great solution. I would recommend it to anyone based on usability. Overall, it is easy enough to use.

BrowserStack has a clean and simple to use interface. I like that it has a "straight to the point" type feel to it. I don't log in and wonder where I need to go to do what I need to do. I'm able to log in and quickly begin my testing process of issues and then get out and get back to the client/reader.

We had the enterprise support with AWS, so overall support experience was good with great engineers on the back providing answers. As you may know, overall AWS support is different and this is not different. Responses through the regular web support channel came easily, fast and accurate. We had questions/issues which were solved fast. Documentation is good as well, especially around the test automation pieces.

I sound like a broken record, but there's not too many negatives to say about BrowserStack. With so many devices nowadays, it's ESSENTIAL to our business to view/test on all browsers to provide the very best customer service. The up-to-date releases always guarantees that the product is supported with any "updates" from any browser or device.

Alternatives Considered

AWS Device Farm

This is the only solution I have used from device farming. From that perspective, I would purchase it again. I think this is a great solution for a large, diverse organization looking to mass deploy and manage software and devices. We selected this software because we have had great luck with other AWS services.

BrowserStack

Compared to other products I've found BrowserStack to have an easy-to-use interface, it offers all the platforms I need and it runs quickly and reliably. The browser plugin is an especially useful feature so I can almost instantly open a URL in one of my BrowserStack presets. It proved useful for basic use at the free price level and for large team use at the higher price level.

Return on Investment

AWS Device Farm

  • Reduced the amount we spent on physical devices by > 90%.
  • Enabled real CI integration even when running E2E test scripts using mobile phones.
  • Helped us to improve overall App stability and rating - fewer crashes (80% to 99% of sessions crashless) and 75% rating increases on apps.

BrowserStack

  • Browserstack has provided us with a quick solution to cross browser compatibility testing at a low cost.
  • Direct impact on ROI is difficult to judge compared to the past, when there were no reliable options for testing across numerous platforms.
  • We had to pull back on our userbase when costs went too high for each individual to access the platform simultaneously.
