Considered Both Products
Carbonite Server
Chose Carbonite Server
Carbonite Server's direction wasn't really for cloud companies as they are more specialized in robust local backup services. I'm a novice when it comes to server backups and replication, but have learned and picked up a lot from talking to the customer center compared to Veeam …
Chose Carbonite Server
We migrated from NetBackup as we wanted to get rid of our Tape library and media used. We also compared with Veeam to replace the Carbonite server backup. We changed our plan, as we needed storage. It is not in our budget. We continued with Carbonite as they are cheaper in …
Veeam Data Platform
Chose Veeam Data Platform
Cheaper, and supported. We had a bad experience with Carbonite being seemingly abandoned. It was difficult to use and support seemed non existent. We would have backups failing and help was not existent.

Veeam on the other hand has been the complete opposite. Always helpful and …
Chose Veeam Data Platform
Veeam Backup &Replication has resolved the cost of the disk and media issue that we have faced in NetBackup. It supports Physical and Virtual environments with Cloud integration. We are able to protect the data on premises as well as in the cloud.
Chose Veeam Data Platform
Our clients that use Veeam were using it before they were our clients, but we renew when appropriate. Veeam is a solid product, but I believe Barracuda is better all around. Lower cost, VMWARE, Hyper-V and physical server backups. Also, Barracuda offers cloud replication at …

More than enough for small companies with several on-prem servers. In 2021, it wouldn't be wise to pit all important data to a single backup service. Carbonite Server is solid, but it's not 100% reliable so I'd definitely recommend having multiple backup services either on the cloud in conjunction with other backup services so the user has multiple safety nets in case of disaster and failed granular restorations.

Veeam Software
I've been using Veeam for years, and it has been very consistent. Once it is set up and working, it keeps working. The biggest disruptions to Veeam have always been the upgrades. Veeam tells me about cool new features, and I upgrade, but then the upgrades seem to not install correctly, and I run into huge problems and have to contact support. You are guided to email-based support, and they don't respond and resolve issues quickly, which leads to a lot of stress. Then I remember to look up the support phone number, and that always leads to getting issues resolved. So, in summary, the product is great, but I wish they would push harder to get customer support tickets resolved quickly. It is very stressful not to have Veeam running when it is so essential to our business.

Pros
Carbonite, an OpenText company
  • The end-user experience is as simple and robust as I have ever seen from a backup solution. The end-user dashboard, should you choose to allow them access, is intuitive and granular.
  • eVault has the best bandwidth management I have experienced. The endpoint target is available for all operating systems and is intelligent and efficient using very low overhead. It includes data de-dupe and encryption while using very little system resources. Combine these features with bandwidth throttling and you can backup a large amount of data over any size wire.
  • eVault's deployment options will fit any budget and size environment. You can deploy using your own hardware, even. They really focus on providing the right solution for each customer instead of making each customer fit into their pre-determined box.

  • File-level restore is quick, reliable, and much simpler than other platforms I've used
  • Replication is extremely simple to configure and test
  • Agent setup for user endpoints and subsequent backup storage is incredibly simple
  • Cloud repository configuration is extremely straightforward and well-documented

Cons
Carbonite, an OpenText company
  • The backup report really needs improvement. It is really pathetic, as it gives wrong information. It is not suitable for auditing.
  • The Exchange DAG backup should support instead of configuring each exchange server.
  • Cloud infrastructure supports a lot of AWS and Azure instances that are coming up.

  • Easier way to coordinate or schedule jobs at one location or among multiple. For example, If I'm running a backup at one location, and I have another job going at another location where I want to replicate to the first location, some sort of feature so VMWare is aware there's a backup going and it should wait.
  • Additional reports, such as monthly reports that shows how many restore points were created per VM and how many incremental points failed for a VM in a month.
  • A feature that gives a better overall view of all your restore points, what jobs they belong to, their age and where the data lives.

We packaged carbonite server with the end user product that they provide but we have had issues where the end user site has been down for days at time and backups for both server and user are backing up but we do not the get notification that it was completed for several days. There appears to be latency issues with the mail delivery for completed backups. Additionally, I have used other backup products and find the Carbonite website interface very clunkly and difficult to navigate.

I have used many other data backup products that are on the market. I trust the configuration options within Veeam to do as they are labeled, without any specific back end software changes that may cause backups to fail if you don't use a systems integrator.
I trust the product for my own home environment as well due to relationship I have with the product at work.

Usability
Carbonite, an OpenText company
Product needs a lot of improvements in some features like Cloud and Reporting.

Veeam Software
Veeam is fairly simple in terms of how it is set up; its not an overly-complicated dashboard that can be intimidating to less technically-inclined users. Veeam also offers good instructional videos to help users work through how to do specific functions. I appreciate that they have specific video tutorials rather than having users scroll through a cumbersome manual.

Veeam Software
I give Veeam Data Platform a rating of 9 for availability because it consistently performs reliably in critical data protection and recovery tasks. The platform is designed to minimize downtime, ensuring that backup and recovery processes are accessible when needed. While there may be rare instances of maintenance or minor application errors, these do not significantly affect the overall reliability of the system. Veeam’s strong architecture and features like high availability configurations further enhance its performance, allowing us to trust it in crucial situations. Overall, it has proven to be a dependable solution that meets our organization's needs effectively.

To identify a bottleneck in the data path, Veeam Backup & Replication
detects the component with the maximum workload, the component
that works for the most time of the job. For example, you use a
low-speed storage device as the backup repository. Even if VM data is
retrieved from the SAN storage on the source side and transported over a
high-speed link, VM data flow will still be impaired at the backup
repository.

Some of the requests we could not get resolved on time. They took a long time to provide the reason for the issue we had raised.

All support cases were solved in a timely manner and there was no unnecessary communication needed to get the answers that were needed to solve the issue. Also the mail communication after closing support cases id on point without too much nagging for feedback or reviews of the completed support tickets.

In-Person Training

Veeam Software
I rated the in-person training an 8 because it was generally effective and provided a solid foundation for understanding the Veeam Data Platform. The instructors were knowledgeable and engaged, making the sessions interactive. However, I felt that some topics could have been covered in more depth, and additional hands-on exercises would have further reinforced the learning experience. Overall, it was a positive training session that adequately prepared attendees for using the product, but there's room for improvement.

Online Training

Veeam Software
I gave it a rating of 7 because, although the online training offered valuable content and covered the essential aspects of the Veeam Data Platform, it lacked interactivity and opportunities for direct engagement with instructors. This made it challenging to ask questions or delve deeper into specific topics. Additionally, some sections felt a bit rushed, which could hinder a comprehensive understanding of more complex features. Overall, while the training was useful, improvements in interactivity and pacing could elevate the experience significantly.

Veeam Software
(I assume this question should say "Veeam" and not "Crownpeak Universal Consent Platform") Planning is key. Planning your backup schedule, size, data restore points, replication if you're doing that, &c. Testing is also important; make sure you back something up and then do a test restore. Set up alerts so you know if things aren't working (or even if they are, always good to know that too).

Netbak is a great product but we also had a secondary issue of having to backup several PC's on site and at remote locations. Carbonite helped with both and gave us one central admin console to be able to check the progress of all our backups, where netbak would have required us to setup a tunnel or use the internet to move data back to our main office.

Before we chose Veeam Data Platform, we compared it with CommVault and Rubrik storage management solutions. However, to compare them by strengths, it was Veeam Data Platform that offered better VM integration and a way easier management console. One was the fact that it was cheaper to use than the other platform, which was packed with a number of features.

In terms of scalability for our company, Veeam was able to cover our backup needs with ease. They have options for even more individualized backup if we were to need them; i.e. if a specific workstation needs its own independent backup. We have not used these resources yet, but I am confident they will be beneficial to our company in the near future.

  • While EVault can become expensive if you have a lot of data to store, but you have to keep in mind that it does not cost you anything more to restore your data in the event of an emergency. Some systems give you a great upfront cost, until you actually need to retrieve your data.
