Data.com

Data.com is a good prospecting and data information tool for any agency or company doing outbound prospecting. Data.com requires you to also have Salesforce CRM, so this tool is really only suited for those companies that can afford Salesforce. Because of this, Data.com seems like a better fit for companies with at least 30 or more employees (total in the company) and at least 5 Salesforce users. Data.com is not a good fit for small businesses.

InsideView

Researching organizations to find the best points of contact. Sometimes companies will not divulge information about employees that work there over the phone or recommend the best person to speak with. So tools like inside view help assist with finding appropriate people to speak with in more tight-lipped companies, and helps with basic size and scope questions.

Pros

Data.com

  • Data.com is appealing because it's affordable. You might need to purchase a few contacts to get rolling, but once you're able to add some yourself and gain additional points, it can very rewarding to "earn" additional contacts by submitting some of your own.
  • There is a wide range of search terms available to narrow down your list by name, region, company name, and others.
  • Easy "add contacts" function, and a template to add a large number of them at once.

InsideView

  • InsideView has a large repository of companies with lots of information: company size, revenue, employees, articles as well as industry specific information.
  • My reps love the option to view "more" and look at discovery questions by industry. It gives them questions to lead with, as well as ideas of what they should be researching.
  • InsideView has a new look and feel rolling out soon. VERY excited about the update.

Cons

Data.com

  • If it provided more details about the company it would be great- information such as employee size or software used would be great.
  • The ability to add a contact with just a number would be great- sometimes you don't have an address.
  • It would be helpful to be notified when a contact you have "purchased" has been changed/updated.

InsideView

  • While the company now supports 12 million global companies and 30 million executives, this is significantly below that of their primary competitors. Other sales intelligence vendors provide up to 10x the company coverage and up to 3x the contact coverage. Coverage of AsiaPac and Latin America is quite limited.
  • Family Trees are limited to subsidiaries so it is difficult to identify local opportunities for leveraging an MSA or targeting local branches.
  • Most US profiles are thin Equifax profiles providing little detail (e.g. no family tree linkage, business descriptions, or contacts).
  • Financials limited to public company Income Statements. For some reason, they never added the Balance Sheet or Cash Flow Statement.
  • The company has not rolled out any significant enhancements to their sales product since 2013 with the exception of adding more profiles. They have shifted their focus to marketing and an API.
  • While they offer some industry content, it is significantly weaker than that found in Hoover's and Avention.
  • They have moved to limit the number of downloads in the service as they sell an InsideView Target service to marketers. Competitors provide few restrictions on company and contact download (though most limit the number of downloadable emails).
  • There is no way to target executives by function across a company and download the prospectinglist. This is becoming a key requirement as firms move to Account Based Marketing and Account Based Sales Development. Competitors such as Hoover's and Avention provide screening across the family tree by job function and level. They also have a deeper set of company linkages than InsideView.

If it was up to me, and me alone, I would select InsideView 100% of the time. Unfortunately it isn't my decision, so my company moved to Data.com. My guess is that it was a financial decision, made by folks that don't use the products. I know that at the end-user level, my team preferred InsideView over Data.com, which is clunky and cumbersome.

Very intuitive to use and I've never had any confusion with features. Anyone can create an account and use the platform simply by adding a contact or company into the database to earn points. It's a great option if you don't have budget for lists or pay services. It is easy to use and anyone can benefit from it.

Intuitive service designed for sales reps. If the user needs help, there is a knowledgebase and a set of recorded webinars. The system is in the language of sales reps.

Whenever I've had a question their support has responded pretty quickly and gives me exactly what I am looking for. I have not had any technical issues so I can't speak to issues there, but as far as general questions from a free user they have impressed me with how quickly they get back to me and the thoroughness of their answers.

They have a knowledgebase, recorded videos, scheduled training sessions, and integrated feedback for content problems (content quality is an inherent issue in all sales intelligence products due to the ongoing decay of company and executive information. It is estimated that 2% of contacts in a database go bad each month due to executive transitions). When I have flagged out of date content, they have quickly researched and repaired the errors with notes indicating the resolution. Corrections were quickly reflected in their database.I would give them a ten, except they lack live instant messaging.

We had to work with InsideView for some custom configurations example we have a custom field in Salesforce called ha location that needed let's say NJ to spell out New Jersey and make certain fields mandatory. They were easy to work with though.

Alternatives Considered

Data.com

My client chose Data.com based on the experience during the evaluation period and the cost comparison. Data.com was the better-suited solution in this scenario. The size of the InsideView database was significantly smaller than Data.com and had limitations on downloads that Data.com did not. InsideView also provided little detail in profiles that were a dealbreaker for my client.

In my previous company, I was using both Linkedin and ZoomInfo, both of them were good, but there was a lot of restrictions with the basic versions, and when we shifted to the LinkedIn Sales Navigator, and ZoomInfo the quality improved but there was not much to get like InsideView. In my current company, at first we were using LinkedIn, but now I appreciate the decision made by our seniors to shift to InsideView. It is my personal opinion that I feel InsideView is better than LinkedIn and ZoomInfo.

Return on Investment

Data.com

  • It does an excellent job of creating a more complete picture of an account and key contacts.
  • Helps clarify the key contacts. Sometimes all you get is a mumbled name on a call that might be very important. Data.com allows for a quick search and identification of the contact that would have been lost otherwise.
  • Even helped us begin sending marketing assets to customers of our partners that share a need overlap.

InsideView

  • Something positive is that it helps you when identifying a company opportunity because it gives you the data where they're not doing good to focus on those points and also help you with the information of the company in one easy-to-use tool.
  • Something negative is that it should look for more info on Latin America market, sometimes info is missed on middle markets for this region.
