I find this tool to be a great product as it comes in really very handy. This product is great when it comes to scenarios where you are just trying to block some specific types of information and data out of your company.

Symantec Endpoint Security

If you want you could think of the industry standard for protection as Symantec [Endpoint Security], if you get the appropriate suite you end up with a solid defense against the outside world. It is also appropriately priced costing us about 10k per year for the 450 Licenses we have. If you are actively being attacked by the CIA or FBI I would spend more money though no amount of money will really matter at that point but if you are just going up against your standard dark forces of the outside then I would recommend this for your endpoint security. It is a solid foundation to build your security stack off of.

Pros

Forcepoint DLP

  • Forcepoint DLP Endpoint module is applied to secure data being used at endpoint like from Microsoft Excel & other Microsoft capabilities also other functions like Email & FTP, Active Sync etc. It secures the data in use at the endpoint.
  • Forcepoint DLP Network Module is applied for the traffic being used in network capabilities like Email, FTP, Web. It also secures the data on the move in the network.
  • Forcepoint Data Discover- Data discover the capability to discover the data which is sensitive for organization and lies across the network, by Discovery tool we can define the data which is important based on regulatory & compliance risk.
  • OCR ( Optical character Recognition) capabilities also come with Data Discover Module by which we can see the embedded text inside the image & that help to prevent sensitive data theft.

Symantec Endpoint Security

  • The virus and spyware protection has worked well for us, catching several things and quarantining the items or cleaning them.
  • The virus definitions very rarely fail to update for the users, so I feel confident that my client machines are kept up to date.
  • I like the report I get daily telling me about threats found and action taken without having to login to the console to look it up myself.

Cons

Forcepoint DLP

  • Remote filtering is not as advanced as we would like.
  • Support time is not as quick as needed in most cases.
  • Upgrades of appliances and software is not as easy as other solutions.
  • HTTPS inspection needs to hand a valid cert and doesnt work correctly with all vendors.

Symantec Endpoint Security

  • Removing dead clients from the console. This is nearly impossible to do, and makes keeping the console clean a very difficult task.
  • Poorly tested versions are sometimes released that cause serious issues for users. This ranges from browsers malfunctioning to BSOD errors.
  • Malware detection is good but not great. We are not confident in SEP by itself to neutralize malware threats. It's detection rate just isn't high enough for next generation and zero day threats.

We have been fairly happy with the product and how it has worked. We have looked at other vendors for url filter and such and have not found one that meets our needs or does what we have been doing with Websense. The product has been fairly stable and we have only had a few issues in the past. We have all seen that it was one of the highest leaders from the Gartner Group Magic Quadrant for Web Gateways.

Best of Breed. Symantec Endpoint Protection beats all other end point products I have used, tested and seen in presentation at this point in time.

Symantec Endpoint Protection centralized management console provides easy to follow, clean, and modern HTML5 based interface. All functionality required to manage Symantec Endpoint Protection is available and presented through this management interface. The Symantec Endpoint Protection provides many roles out of the box and presents relevant information based on the user role. Symantec Endpoint Protection can benefit from further scripting/automation interface development.

We've used it for years and the software is easy to use. The dashboard is easy to read, and you can easily figure out where to go to troubleshoot or deploy software. Symantec is there for emergencies like backup restoration or file retrieval. It's pretty low maintenance. Symantec is there when your IT infrastructure needs it

Support from Forcepoint has been lacking. When calling in with a high priority issue we rarely are able to work with a technician immediately. The queue waits are very long and when you get through there are no support engineers available and we need to wait for a call back for hours it seems.

I've called a few times and the support is great. They help me walk through the issues that I was having and even remotely connected to my server and show me how the fix the issue. I hope the support doesn't change since they were bought by Broadcom.

Use a third party deployment tool and not the deployment option within the SEP Manager itself.

Alternatives Considered

Forcepoint DLP

Netskope, Digital Guardian. We've stuck with Forcepoint to limit the number of major architectural changes in a given year. If we achieved diminishing marginal returns on its ROI, then we'd change because the prevention is good, but the headache has to be less than the prevention or it needs replacement as a solution.

More robust options and protections than Malware Bytes. Better overall detection and alerting to security issues. The overall ROI was better for us and we felt would also give us a stronger line of defense in our overall security strategy. We chose Symantec Endpoint because it gave us a top notch product in a price point we wanted.

Return on Investment

Forcepoint DLP

  • The exchange of financial documents with customers creates extreme risk as data loss could result in financial and reputation damage to the customer. The cost of deploying Forcepoint is fractions of pennies compared to the potential financial impact of data loss.
  • There is some administrative overhead associated as false positives are inevitable, requiring a manual review and a potential loss of productivity.

Symantec Endpoint Security

  • SEP has had a very nice ROI in the form of keeping our network safe and clients' machines clean and free from spyware and viruses.
  • The negative downside is that reinstalling the client isn't always an easy method. A lot of times we just have the user reimage their whole machine, which is usually the last resort.
  • Another positive aspect of SEP is that it allows us to identify any problematic machines which might be allowing any malware, spyware or viruses in through any network ports or connections.
We use Symantec Endpoint Environment in a manufacturing and conventional office setting. This is a very large scale operational of over 10,000 users
