FreeConferenceCall.com

I think that FreeConferenceCall.com is well suited for anyone, really. They do a great job at providing options for all types of scenarios-from basic phone calls to now offering the video conference. The only time I think that it might not be as advantageous to use is when there are only 2 people that are needing to connect-in that case it's just as easy to direct dial

Skype

Skype is a simple and easy-to-use application. I enjoy that I can use it on a variety of devices, including my PC, phone, tablet, and Microsoft Edge. Skype is a fantastic program for sending messages, making phone calls, video calls, and holding meetings. You can make a voice or video call to anyone on your list of friends. You can create group conversations by dragging and dropping your friends, and you can make voice and video calls with everyone or some of them. By directly adding people to Skype groups or providing them with the URL, you can invite them to join. Users who are added to a Skype group will not be able to see any messages that were sent before they were added. Meetings are also possible. What I dislike: It has a boring appearance due to its lack of an appealing user interface. In addition, there is no option to schedule a meeting. Searching through the chat history for a message is a chore for me. It would have been far better if there had been a search option within the chat. Instead, it only allows for a worldwide search, which takes time and is difficult to locate. It does not provide a remote control option for the screen during a screen-sharing session. Customer service is mediocre at best.

Pros

FreeConferenceCall.com

  • Clear calls, it is easy to hear no matter how many participants are on the call.
  • Does not kick participants off, we have up to 40 people on the call and it works fine.
  • Easy to remember, the phone number and code is the same so it is easy for staff to recall.
  • No busy signals, we can always get through to set up call.

Skype

  • The instant chat function is great. Very straightforward, easy to use, easy to learn, no technical issues.
  • Video calls are pretty easy also, user friendly and a mostly stable connection with no issues.
  • Voice calls are easy also, eliminates the need for an external landline or the need to use your cell phone. Clear connections, not really any dropped calls.

Cons

FreeConferenceCall.com

  • Recently callers cannot get onto the call
  • Users on the call get bumped off
  • Non-transparent policy about why problems are occurring. If FreeConferenceCall.com can't reliably provide free service, just tell me that rather than blaming it on a law that changed and local carriers causing the problems. The real problem is that the law did recently change, which allowed companies like FreeConferenceCall.com to collect a revenue share for all calls placed through certain hubs--even free calls. This loophole was removed recently, and I believe the service issues I've been experiencing are being used to extort users to buy a paid service in order to receive trouble-free service.
  • I found customer service representatives rude and dismissive

Skype

  • Skype is a RESOURCE hog. People who have limited bandwidth will have poor call quality.
  • It is hard to figure out how to use emojis and upload images in the chat.
  • The background images do not fool anybody....it is clearly not your real background.

I think so far there is no reason not to renew the license. We have been using Skype for a long time and are very satisfied with it.

Skype is not as good as Facetime in terms of ease to glance at it and figure out how it works. I think that's a result of Skype trying to be too many things at once. A lot of the menu and UI could be streamlined, and I would jettison some of the additional functions that have been tacked on over the years to simplify. That being said, while some options are slightly hard to find, they all work flawlessly once found.

I am not aware of the current support level for Skype for business, as I have never used even though I have the product. However, the support for Skype's personal paid users is not where it could be. Users who pay for Skype features do not have a clear path to reach out to support. So, rating 6, can be better as soon as I need to use Skype for business support and get a good experience. I will say that I will renew Skype for Business subscription, which is a significant inconsistency on my end. The explanation is that Skype for Business comes bundled with Office for Business, with no additional cost, so why not.

Alternatives Considered

FreeConferenceCall.com

So this doesn't have the polish that say Zoom or Teams has, but for free, you can't complain. The real big unknown is anything to do with security where a product like Teams is great. Zoom and Teams seem to have become standard that everyone has installed and is familiar with, but the adjustment to FCC is pretty fast and painless.

Skype

Microsoft Teams provides basically the same services. Local number calling is not available (that I know of) but that only matters if you have any need to use it. Teams is a little more stable, especially with a lot of people on a call. Skype is easier to set up and to operate. Skype also has a larger install base.

Return on Investment

FreeConferenceCall.com

  • It was free so cost was good.
  • Lacks features we needed.
  • We now prefer Zoom which has apps, features and more we need.

Skype

  • Skype made keeping in touch with an advisor in Mexico very easy. The initiative there resulted in 5 new partnerships.
  • Skype has helped me with account management for at least 3 customers in LATAM--usually it's a fast way to answer a question about a support renewal.
  • For about 9 months Skype helped me stay in touch with a colleague in Prague. We would meet once a week to go over sales activities.
