Google Mobile-Friendly Test

When our web design clients call us asking to update their websites to look mobile friendly to Google, then Google Mobile-Friendly Test is already the perfect solution for us to use, as Google knows their own search results best in designing their own web tools. However, if a client really has a lot of their own customers wanting a responsive design for specific devices, for example, a corporate customer that gives its employees Ipads, then Google Mobile-Friendly Test might not be as well suited.

Google Search Console

Search console must be integrated with every website as it is crucial to get a thorough keyword analysis of webpages. It helps in improving your click-through rate and fasten the process of your post getting crawled. Its Robots.txt settings is a bit complicated, hence avoid it if you are not a technical person

Pros

Google Mobile-Friendly Test

  • The test gives you an option to test a live website or a chunk of code. This way your test your site code, even if your website is still in development.
  • The instant "green for good" is easy to see and explain.
  • The list of "page loading errors" gives you a nice explanation of loading issues that don't necessarily affect the site visibly, but are still slowing it down. This gives you a "hit list" of things to fix or look into.

Google Search Console

  • Provides details on what other sites contain backlinks to your site, along with the page they direct to within your site
  • Displays impressions and click throughs for Google search queries
  • Individual page performance by location and device category as it pertains to generating clicks leading to your site
  • Basic indexing and readability issues within your site
  • The new interface that just rolled out is much easier on the eyes

Cons

Google Mobile-Friendly Test

  • The feedback can be technical for a non-technical user.

Google Search Console

  • It can be a little difficult to navigate
  • More training resources would be an asset. A beginner is given the power to completely destroy a sites search results at the push of a button. Likewise it is a powerful tool to enhance search results also.
  • An option to take care of multiple versions of the same site simultaneously would be helpful. An option to use the same validation script across all versions and administer them simultaneously would be a time save (i.e. non-www, www, http://, and https:// versions of the same site).

Google Search Console is a simple program that allows organizations to get a solid understanding of the way their site functions and how users land on it. It can be used for making critical business decisions regarding marketing budgets and that within itself is why it deserves a 10.

As with all Google software, your primary source of help is their forums, their knowledge base articles, or whatever tutorials you can find on the web. Often answers on their forums are not straightforward and may not address the actual issue you're experiencing. The KB articles are typically written like instruction manuals - for better or for worse. Tutorials on the web may vary, but the odds are good someone out there had the same questions as you and was kind enough to document their experience.

Alternatives Considered

Google Mobile-Friendly Test

The Google Mobile-Friendly Test is much better than Bing Webmaster Tools to ensure our clients' websites are mobile friendly responsive. Google's tool is created specifically for most of the online searches from the internet, and most modern devices, modern browsers, and screen resolution settings. Bing is not as technically advanced as Google and not as specific in their tools, to ensure the creation of mobile-friendly responsive devices.

Google Search Console

We use Google Search Console in tandem with other products like Google Analytics - not in place of it. Search Console definitely provides information about organic search keywords that Google Analytics does not provide, so that's been a very helpful addition. We also use Yoast to help with optimization of pages that might be identified by Search Console. In the past, I've used tools like Moz and Screaming Frog do some similar search/ranking analysis; those do have some more unique features that help to guide next steps, but I don't think they're replacements for what Search Console provides, especially given the crawl/sitemap features.

Return on Investment

Google Mobile-Friendly Test

  • The impact isn't necessarily measurable. I would compare it to asking a carpenter how much ROI a hammer provides when building a house. Google Mobile-Friendly Test is a free tool that is useful for website analysis and testing.

Google Search Console

  • I'd say there is no business in the world that had negative ROI from GSC, since it's completely free, super easy to implement and has a great value for people with a brain. All of the companies I worked for in the last 10 years were using it and all of these companies had positive ROI.
