HPE SimpliVity
Chose HPE SimpliVity
We have decided to sign with Nutanix. We feel they are improving technology and are just a better software now.
Chose HPE SimpliVity

There were not many others > 4 years ago that stacked up.

Nutanix at the time just was too pricey compared to what HPE SimpliVity offered.

Chose HPE SimpliVity

SimpliVity OmniCube supported NVidia Grid cards when we did our POC where Nutanix didn't.

SimpliVity also had a better business case for us as it gave us the DR planning that we wanted as well as a way to be innovating and reduce our space usage in the server room.

SimpliVity …

Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
Chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
We were looking at Simplivity before they were bought out by HP. We liked Nutanix because of the included hypervisor and file services - we were paying way too much for VMware licensing to continue using it.
Chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
The HPe solution we looked at was not as good, this was only introduced as one of the aquired companies used it and we. after we took over and looked under the hood, we felt that it was not a very ideal solution for use and that is what prompted use to abandon that infra and …
Chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
vSAN on VXrail and a Cisco Flashstack was our two existing systems before bringing in a Nutanix cluster. The performance of Nutanix HCI was far better than vSAN's performance (hybrid vs. hybrid and AF vs. AF.) However, Pure does deliver on its claim of being the fastest storage …
Chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
Simply put Nutanix AOS is in another class. It is so much better, faster, easier to use, train, etc. I would recommend Nutanix every time.
Chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
Nutanix is the most user-friendly with rich web UI and features. Nutanix is the easiest to do upgrades and updates with.
Chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
Nutanix AOS is a hands-down much better thought-out and more robust solution than vSAN.
Better priced than SimpliVity.
Simpler HCI solution than Pure.
Chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
AOS is a lot simpler, more performant than the other solutions
Chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
Nutanix AOS doesn't have any legacy hardware like Simplivity.
Cisco HyperFlex uses FI switches.
I want a solution that is true HCI, and Nutanix AOS gives me this option.
Chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
When we evaluated, VSAN was not nearly as stable or mature as the Nutanix platform was. Capacities and upgrade operations were more flexible/mature on Nutanix.
Chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
Nutanix AOS is very easy to scale up
Chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
The Nutanix ecosystem blew vSAN out of the water in size, overhead, and general functionality. vSAN rides on top of VMware, where Nutanix is a whole system built from the ground up to service virtualization. Cost of vSAN was much more expensive than our Nutanix install and …
Chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
Seriously, there is no real competitors to Nutanix. They are the best in every situation. Once you read technical specs and you do a PoC you immediately understand why this is the best in class. Nutanix is the most platform agnostic solution, software only, all terrain vendor …
Chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
Nutanix has met our requirements as well as our budget to implement the new solution to retire our old hardware and 3Par San.
Chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
When we first bought Nutanix in 2016, vSan wasn't nearly as robust an HCI solution as Nutanix was. We evaluated VxRail in 2018 when we were buying our all-flash Nutanix cluster. vSan on VxRail has made significant improvements in that time but we felt Nutanix still offered …
Chose Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure
Nutanix is more expensive than VSAN. There's no getting around this. But the value of a Nutanix system far outweighs the value of VSAN. Nutanix will give you data locality, VSAN will flood the network with disk reads & writes. Nutanix wrote their own replication factor …
VMware vSAN
Chose VMware vSAN
Currently[,] we are testing both technologies in a time frame so we [still know] after some years which one is the best, according to our loads' needs. We had VMware before moving to vSAN, one [of] many [reasons] to move to vSAN is the opportunity to make the jump in a …
Chose VMware vSAN
Upgrades and maintenance are little difficult in other solutions available. Also, VMware vSAN offers a vast range of features optimizing the CPU and memory to great extent resulting in faster performance . Performance is enhanced with VMware vSAN and support of vSAN is also …
Chose VMware vSAN
VMWare stand out compared to all the products. However, it is worthwhile mentioning the following products can be used to achive similar results. Hitachi Virtual Storage Systems Nutanix Cloud Infrastrucure. In case if we are using Nuatinux at the Hypervisor level then it …
Chose VMware vSAN
Nutanix was the first hyper-converged solution, but it requires its own hardware. hyperflex looks promising, but it's also only working on cisco hardware. in both cases the costs are much higher, compared to building a custom vSAN solution on certified hardware, leveraging …
Chose VMware vSAN
Nutanix and VMware are comparable solutions but VMware ESXi is a leading hypervisor. Nutanix also support ESXi and AHV and other hypervisors. We support both Nutanix and VMware and it is customer choice to choose considering many other things like software, channels and …
Chose VMware vSAN
vSAN is far more integrated than any other SDS solution running on vSphere. It is also a simpler deployment and management model.

I only know what I know...which is my IT world. Having two datacenters that were physical servers attached to a SAN that "attempted" to replicate and then migrating. For a SMB small IT shop that happens to have two datacenters already in place...this has been ideal. I can have a generalist maintain the system and we have a private cloud for DR with hardly any effort...the biggest gain by far!

Nutanix
For an organization that requires top-notch performance HCI, Nutanix is the best. You may start with 3 nodes and expand the cluster as required. The management through Nutanix Prism Central and Element was so easy that even a Junior Engineer was able to handle it. The Nutanix platform is not suitable for organizations with a small budget and fewer requirements for high-performance infrastructure, as the Nutanix solution itself is suited for enterprises.

The product is a must for enterprise & SMB segments as this gives a good value for money and the licensing policy is very well defined and cost effective for the feature set it provides. This is very well suited for organization which have multiple brand storage systems and would like to consolidate them all together, thus providing a huge storage capacity for the organizations data growth. The product becomes less appropriate in organization where they have single storage platform as the service provider would have the ability to consilidate all the storage systems. Hence this products may be under utilized.

Pros
Hewlett Packard Enterprise
  • Deduplication and Compression - SimpliVity keeps the space consumption to a minimum. We currently have 60 servers running virtually and we still have room to grow. This really helps with the backups as we can have longer retention.
  • Backups - Ability to keep backups for longer and to create multiple backup policies for a VM is a breeze. You can have a backup policy for each datastore as well as a separate backup policy for the same VM.
  • Creating Datastores is very easy. No more messing around with LUNS and iSCSI. Just go to the SimpliVity tab and select create datastore and it's done. You can also increase the datastore on the fly as well as have a datastore bigger than 2TB.
  • File level recovery is included as well. The whole backup process in SimpliVity can help you do away with other software.

Nutanix
  • One-click upgrades; whether it's hypervisor, firmware, disk or other updates. This feature has drastically decreased complexity and administration time.
  • Data Locality. Not all hyperconverged technology is created equal. When I first purchased Nutanix they were the only vendor (and as far as I know, still are) that made sure the storage a VM used was on the same host that VM was running on. Given a normal operating state, the [storage] network is literally only used for replication data.
  • They got rid of traditional RAID. Nutanix uses software to determine where a VM's storage should be written and replicated to. This dramatically decreases I/O when changing the number of nodes in a cluster, be it on purpose or during a failure scenario. Ex. adding a new node: If one uses RAID arrays then enough space has to be set aside to create a new array that includes the new node, then all the information has to be copied over, and the old array destroyed. RAID arrays do not grow and shrink gracefully so Nutanix has designed a better solution.
  • The Nutanix management interface was built on HTML5. No more flash headaches!

  • VMware runs VSAN certification programs to make sure the OEM sells validated nodes. It helps customers to select appropriate certified ready nodes like Lenovo ThinkAgile VX which comes factory configured and easy to set up.
  • Hyperconverged solutions reduce real estate space and networking costs when compare with shared storage. The host overhead also less.
  • Supports All-Flash (SATA and NVMe SSDs) and Hybrid vSAN with HDD and SSD. So customers can choose cost-effective solutions appropriate to their workloads.
  • Supports different storage policies, RAID and duplication, and compression features and it makes a complete storage solution.

Cons
Hewlett Packard Enterprise
  • UI can be less than intuitive at times
  • reporting on the actual amount of space utilised can be misleading
  • Upgrading to additional storage if not specc'd correctly can be very expensive.

Nutanix
  • Can be priced high at times.
  • The one downside I have working with Nutanix is the sales team. They seem to try to add in extra goodies to sales quotes or push for extras that you don't really need and you have to tell them to take them out. Don't be afraid to push back on them.
  • Need to analyze sizing with sales team to ensure right sizing.

  • We were a fairly early adopter of VMware vSAN and as such experienced several growing pains.
  • We experienced a few bugs that took a few software versions upgrades to go mostly away.
  • The biggest issue we had overall was with host drivers. Even with vSAN ready node compatible hosts, you have to be very careful that the drivers for NIC and RAID controllers are right.

AOS definitely make our dev/test virtual environment management much easier than before. And the consolidation the test/dev environment from Azure and Cisco UCS, we have less need to transfer large amount of data between different hardware platforms which was very big challenge. To expand the capacity is very easy to archive as well.

Usability
Hewlett Packard Enterprise
It sits nicely ontop of VMWare and is easy enough to use. Some improvements to the UI could be done, such as placing buttons where it is expected to have them not in unusual places, so you have to hunt for them. The backup and restore is intuitive and makes things super easy if you need to do a quick rollback. Space savings on multiple VMs and backups means we are backing up more than we need which gives us confidence in what we do. Updating the system is also fairly easy and their support has always been fantastic. They will contact us if they detect any issues, usually before we notice them!

It's not out of the box easy, but once you get the fundamentals the steep learning curve flattens out and the processes to get things done and how it works becomes very apparent. It's wrapping the slight change in workflow from prior VM management methods took time to unbox and apply the Nutanix Cloud Infrastructure way

Deploying and configuring VSAN is a relatively simple process for people that are already used to working in virtual environments, primarily for those that are familiar with vSphere. The compatibility of those two products is amazing. You shouldn't really encounter any issues and if you do, you surely did something wrong.

The performance is nothing short of amazing. This is an HCI solution, and as any all-flash HCI solution is amazingly fast, Nutanix AOS fills local IO requests until its local IO is saturated before reaching out over the network. This lowers latency substantially compared to vSAN.

Support is very good. With proactive support, you are supported by an engineer in North America who answers the phone and immediately begins assisting with your issue. The folks I have dealt with in the last several years have been very skilled and it is rare to have a ticket open for more than a day or two. Issues affecting production are dealt with appropriately and are escalated within the support organization.

Our implementation team were great and worked with us and got the program up and running very easily. Every time we called post implementation we immediately talked to an Engineer, which is so unusual in dealing with companies. Everything they have promised they have full filled. I think their support is top notch.

Support is (as always forVMware) top notch and easy to work with. The majority of computer companies are outsourcing their tech staff, and it seems they do as well. But their guys know the product well and are quick to respond to your ticket (if the severity is right!).

IPv6 is needed for link local discovery. We do not have IPv6 configured on our network so the easiest way to get our nodes configured and discovered by foundation was to configure the IPv4 addressing within the node prior to trying to discover with foundation.
