I found Jasper to be quite flexible. Many ways to do things. The server side seems pretty robust. I found it to be a little on the complex side for developing reports. Some of the expression language has unexpected behavior that a more polished product likely would not have. Unless you are a developer or technical by nature, Studio report designer may not be for you. The tables work quite well though.

SAP Crystal

I have recommended Crystal Reports many times to colleagues. It works well with any database structure I've written reports against. I have done a few charts with Crystal and they look amazing. I think the only problem many have with it is the learning curve but that can be overcome with a few online tutorials. There is a wealth of information on the internet. Most colleagues have grown to love Crystal Reports.

Pros

  • Flexibility. TIBCO Jaspersoft is extremely flexible. We use the embedded report engine to crank out thousands of static reports in PDF and Excel format. We use JasperServer to serve up HTML and javascript based dynamic reports and dashboards through visualize.js. We also use JasperServer directly for working with data in an ad hoc fashion. There are even ETL capabilities (though we haven't really explored those much).
  • There is also flexibility when it comes to connecting to different data sources, defining security, etc.
  • Within reports you aren't even limited to the libraries that JasperSoft provides! We've done some very rich and complex visualizations through JasperSoft using third party libraries like D3.js. Really, the sky is the limit.
  • I haven't run into a data presentation problem yet that I can't solve at least in part by using Jaspersoft.
  • Report creation tools. Jaspersoft Studio is extremely powerful. It is also a very familiar environment for folks coming from other report creation tools. This is important to us because we have to train dozens of report writers across our clients every year. For those that come from Crystal Reports, Jaspersoft Studio feels very intuitive very quickly.
  • Pixel perfection. We have a lot of standardized reports from the IRS and other government entities. Jaspersoft makes it easy to put a very visually complex form together quickly and accurately.
  • Power. I have yet to run into a reporting problem Jaspersoft cannot solve.

  • It allows you to connect to virtually any data source. I have used it to write reports using data from DB2, SQL, Progress, Excel spreadsheets, XML data, Access, and Lotus Notes databases. You can also join different database types together in one report.
  • The drag and drop layout makes it easy to design your report and easy to select data fields to add to your report.
  • When creating a report the Standard Report Creation Wizard walks you through each step needed to create the report and will layout the report for you.
  • There is a wealth of online answers if you have a question about how to do something specific in Crystal Reports.

Cons

  • Performance on some of the way adhoc domains work. So for example, we have to set the default aggregation on all fields to NONE otherwise it calculates them ahead of time, causing delays. This is mostly because of the size of data we are dealing with. Having to set that default to NONE means we need more educated users to use the tool. Not a show stopper, but could be better.
  • We purchased JaspersoftETL. Just don't bother. There is no TIBCO support for that product and after this experience, I wouldn't recommend the underlying product at all.
Eva Donaldson profile photo
  • I would like to see graph features to be improved. SAP has made leaps and bounds over the years and I know they will get there.
  • I would like to see SAP products bundled for a more turn key solution.

We had to stop paying our support to get Jasper management to pay attention to our issues. We are now working closely with them to try to resolve these problems. If they can be resolved to our satisfaction, we will continue with them. If not, we will look elsewhere.

Being able to get up and running quickly is a key asset. There's plenty of advanced features to master that are surprisingly difficult in others tools (or just missing from other tools altogether). The UI can feel a bit dated at times but its usability isn't affected. Any issue you have can usually be resolved by searching in the user community

We've never had an outage of the software itself. If it was unavailable, it was due to a network outage, not a problem with Jasper.

Never have we had a performance issue with it. The "slow" reports are due to the speed of the data being returned from the database, not Jasper.

Support

TIBCO Jaspersoft7.2

We have been several times in the need of support from Tibco, mostly to setup and fine tune the production environment, and every time their support was always willing to help. Whenever the issue was complex, and eventually due to customizations done by us at their software, we can anytime reach to our Customer Success Manager, who is available to enter and contribute into our internal discussions with all our teams, so to be involved in our product implementation roadmap, and connecting back to Tibco support team, to provide clarity on our needs and deadlines. The result is our requests get resolved brilliantly.

Resources available in the TIBCO Knowledge Base are covering almost everything. They are well organized, and covering almost every possibility. There is always the change to get back to the TIBCO support or to the dedicated Customer Success Manager whenever something very specific or bound to a customization is not covered.

It is not widely adopted; Crystal Reports is a niche that is allowed to co-exist with the Cognos corporate standard. If it came up for a vote, Crystal Reports would not be adopted.

Alternatives Considered

We were using Seagate Crystal Reports previously. but Crystal Reports licensing is based on a user access basis, hence as the organisation expands and user count increases, licensing costs will escalate.BI functionality as well as an ETL tool in Jaspersoft allow us to build reports with integrated processes much more easily compared to Seagate's.
Esther Lai profile photo
We selected Crystal Reports almost 20 years ago due to its feature set, flexibility, and cost. The only other reporting tool evaluate at that time was Cognos and it was much more expensive then.17 years ago we spent a few thousand dollars on some developer/designer licenses and built our own Fat client based presentation and batch reporting mechanisms (Fat client runtimes were free).Key issues for us were:1. Universal Access/availability. Financial analysts should be able to run and view Financial Statements and a Machine Operator should be able to see his monthly performance report. Everyone in the company has access to some reporting - limited by who they are/job position.2. The tool needed to be a universal reporting tool - not constrained to one application platform/database.10(?) Years ago we moved to web-based delivery (using SAP's Business Objects Edge Platform). Higher cost but still only low 5 figures. Compared to alternatives such as Oracle's BI offerings its been a steal!

I am not sure what is meant by Report security. You choose who the report goes to and who its doesn't. Your security of that report would depend on the type of file and would require you setting that after the report has been created. Click export and you can choose whatever file format you desire. It has the ability to create the major ones (PDF, Excel, Word, csv, etc.) There is no automation of reports built into the software and to do so required purchasing a third party software for cheap ($25.00 or so).

Real Time is great. It refreshed in seconds and is only dependent on the refresh of your database. If you have transaction data going through, you will be able to see this immediately. There was some confusion when windows was upgraded to mostly 64 bit as the installation needed to be on both ODBC drives. Switching between data sources was really quick and easy, just need to set up DSN connections to various sources. without dictionaries not as user friendly for the average user.

Return on Investment

  • Our use of the tool has elevated the level of interest of our customers in the way the information is being presented.
  • Our organization has an added emphasis on business intelligence and our use of Jaspersoft has allowed for us to meet these goals in a more timely manner.
  • We do encounter and occasional glitch in the product that has us needing to find a work-around in order for us to meet a defined business requirement.

  • Employee Empowerment - Now that our Crystal Reports are written and published, all of our team members have access to run the same reports across the company. Previously, there was only 1 point person in charge of running reports, which took a lot of time away from other job duties.
  • Increased Employee Efficiency - One of the Crystal Reports my company uses has allowed me to take a task that took 3 days to complete and cut the time down to 4 hours. There was a lot of manual data collection and calculations that were done, which has also led to less errors.
  • Accurate real-time data - Since Crystal Reports are very quick to run, we are able to give real time data to our customers rather than maintaining oudated databases in other systems such as Excel.
