Likelihood to Recommend

Mailgun

Mailgun's pay-as-you-go pricing structure is fantastic, especially if you don't need to send that much email. The pricing, including the free tier, is much more generous than what you can get with some pricier providers, like SendGrid. I mainly just use Mailgun as an SMTP server for web services, and the service has been set-up-and-forget, which is great because I never even have to log onto the Mailgun website and do any work. Mailing list support also looks great for rolling-your-own and not relying on more expensive mailing list services.

Postmark

When we receive reports that a client has not received an email, Postmark allows us to review the handshake and whether the message was successfully processed and delivered. If the email was bounced for any reason, Postmark allows us to reenable the account to open the communication channel once again.

Pros

Mailgun

  • Emails are delivered instantly and there is an option to queue thousands of emails. It's a big plus if you want to send bulk mail to a large number of users (e.g newsletter subscribers, marketing email to clients etc.).
  • Using its tools like domain verification, there are more chances of successful email delivery and that the email will unlikely go to spam/junk folder.
  • The log & reports section of Mailgun is really impressive. It gives details about performance of each email sent and if an email couldn't be delivered successfully, exact reasons are shown. Knowing the reason helps us to resolve the issue sometimes.

Postmark

  • Excellent real time tracking of production server.
  • Automated reporting is very nice. Great to not have to pull reports manually.
  • User management is very easy.
  • Cost effective.

Cons

Mailgun

  • No built-in templating features (This was a bit sad after coming from Mandrill which excelled at this)
  • Dashboard UI (although easy to use) is a bit dated in appearance
  • Logs are cumbersome compared to Mandrill
  • Setting up TLD (top level domain) names (things like .online or .church) that are not common require an email to tech support (this is annoying)
  • Sometimes can be slow in delivery
  • Shared IP addresses can be SPAM filtered or delayed (requires an email to support to have a new one assigned - Note: this can be mitigated by buying a dedicated one for a monthly fee)

  • We have run into some glitches in their system that have causes messages to not get delivered or for delivery to be delayed. I'm not sure what causes this on Postmark's end but it makes for some very angry customers on our end.

Usability

Mailgun

Mailgun 7.0

It could be more up-to-date and could offer some extra features that other competitors do like templating and better querying and filtering. As it is right now most things are easy to use but seem rather barebones next to Mandrill. The API is easy to implement thanks to the great documentation which is why I recommend Mailgun so often.

Support

MailGun's support staff is both friendly and helpful. They were very instrumental early on with helping out during the setup process by answering questions, providing documentation on best sending practices, detailing information about the advantages of sending from a dedicated IP rather than an IP pool, and helping us to remove ourselves from blacklists.

Postmark has been an excellent solution for our business needs. We have been with them for years and have no intention of changing providers anytime soon. Support was excellent as we were getting started and their API documentation made implementation quick and easy

Alternatives Considered

Mailgun

Mailgun was selected by the co-founders and original development team. But once I took over as the head of development and marketing we switched over to the competitor, SendGrid. SendGrid was not only cheaper, but gave us a much more robust product with marketing emails, ads, a drag-and-drop editor on our transactional emails, and more. It made our small startup look much more professional, legit, and caused a huge increase in our ROI and customer retention.

We felt Postmark's focus on transactional emails and their use of shared domain reputation made them stand out. We also like their user interface and ability to have many virtual email servers. Pricing was competitive and after a trial we saw a big increase in deliverability rates. Therefore it was an easy decision to use Postmark over other providers.

Return on Investment

Mailgun

  • Sending mails is necessary. Period. Using mailgun delivers what it promises. It had a positive impact on my application.
  • My business was not using emails to generate revenue. It was more of an information basis type of thing. But indirectly delivering emails with 100% success rate is a good ROI.
  • I never had to send more than 10K emails which is within their free tier. So I saved up there. The only cost for me was my time spent understanding email protocols but once I know it, I can use any email service like mailgun easily.

  • Many customers buy our product because of the messaging functionality. Having the ability to send and receive messages through our platform, while having them tracked in one place is a huge advantage.
