SharePoint
Chose Microsoft SharePoint
MS SharePoint is a better option for our team as we use Office 365 across our organization. It allows us some integration, and was a more familiar interface for many of the users on our team. It met our security needs and standards for our parent company as well.
Chose Microsoft SharePoint
MS Sharepoint was integrated in our marketing department before I arrived. Although we've run into some issues with some of its features, such as forms, its poor native Search application, and some other logistical headaches, we've been pretty happy overall with the way we've …

Chose Microsoft Viva Engage
I would say Yammer stacks up to Jabber pretty similarly, except with yammer we have the ability to create more of a collaborate platform. We love Jabber, but we use that more for direct instant messaging, whereas Yammer brings us all together in a larger group (it’s been great …
Chose Microsoft Viva Engage
There are few good alternatives to Microsoft Yammer that serve up the same functionality and allow for networking to the same extent. Prior to Yammer, we used an internal tool which was clunky and did not meet our companies needs. Yammer has proven to be much more successful …
Chose Microsoft Viva Engage
Yammer created very important and reliable social network across the whole company. We used to have MS SharePoint, but since Yammer became available via Office 365 we moved to Yammer.

IBM Connections is difficult to maintain + costs are higher.
Chose Microsoft Viva Engage
We currently use Salesforce which is much more robust in sharing knowledge base information. We also currently use teams' SharePoint and OneDrive to store information and files.
Chose Microsoft Viva Engage
For business Yammer offers closed groups and the ability to manager security from a corporate level and not just at the individual level.
Chose Microsoft Viva Engage
SharePoint required a lot of system upgrades and migration exercises. Due to its size, we missed our opportunity to more effectively communicate and train for these changes. As a result, we selected Yammer to have a more robust enterprise network.
Chose Microsoft Viva Engage
Microsoft Yammer far exceeded expectations when the company I work for switched from SharePoint. There was a limited learning curve, and a bit of training need, but generally the transition was smooth. SharePoint, while it proved to be useful company-wide, we have found that …

Microsoft
SharePoint Document Management excels as a central repository for storing, organising, and retrieving documents. It supports version control, metadata tagging, secure access, and integration with tools like Power Automate. At our organisation, it's used for managing contracts, policies, and supplier documents. SharePoint Workflow Automation integrates with Power Automate to streamline approvals, gather feedback, and automate recurring tasks. This reduces reliance on email chains and manual trackers.

Yammer is great when you have a company culture that encourages friendly collaboration and communication. It can be a great supplement (but certainly not a substitute) for bonding and sharing ideas and thoughts. Certain channels can be really successful, too, like a channel where people can post dog pictures or something fun like that!

Pros
Microsoft
  • We track employees' performance sheets, which are accessible to the employee, his manager, and HR, and this helps with transparency.
  • We maintain technical process documents and SOPs, which help us quickly provide relevant documents during audits.
  • We maintain incident documents change request forms in SharePoint, which helps us in tracking the changes.

  • Providing a platform for social news in the company where "bottom up" topics can percolate freely across department
  • Social networking across the company where folks can divide their work into topics instead of teams
  • Basic collaboration within a group including document sharing with ability to pin documents to a team

Cons
Microsoft
  • Windows Explorer users have some difficulty having to constantly UPLOAD / DOWNLOAD files. Specifically on the DOWNLOAD when they are used to Drag & Drop in & out of LOCAL folders via Window's explorer.
  • Microsoft SharePoint supports multiple "library" types. When implementing our "image" library the search function is done via "tags" and boolean logic. This is challenging to most end users. I'd like our users to be able to search our Microsoft SharePoint image library without having to enter KEYWORD or other BOOLEAN logic.
  • Microsoft SharePoint can also be an internal website for each department or company wide communication tool but I believe these features are geared for much larger organizations. Since we are a SMB we really aren't using these features. So maybe something more useful to SMBs would be nice.

  • Although the social enterprise network works very well, there is room for some slight improvement - such as the ability to attract users. By being part of the Microsoft Office Suite, it is offered as an "add-on" and many overlook it and see it as unnecessary at first. It would be smart for Microsoft to sell it as its own product so it could gather more popularity as a "social network".
  • Giving an option to filter results could be better as well as giving an option to turn off the "recent activity" bar on the home page.

It's integral to our business. It's already included with most of the Office 365 licensing we buy, so the cost is effectively zero. It stores our files, it is the foundation for custom applications, and Microsoft only continues to enhance its functionality and its connections to other Microsoft tools. SharePoint just keeps getting better and better.

Microsoft is dedicated to continual improvement on Yammer. They realize the value that Yammer brings to the table with their clients. In the short time that we have had Yammer implemented, we are just now beginning to see the strong impact it has on becoming more effective and efficient around collaboration.

Usability
Microsoft
No usability issues reported. Individual teams also have allocated areas which replace legacy shared drives on local LANs. Access to Sharepoint resources is fully integrated with corporate Active Directory with additional two-factor authentication required for administrative users. Users have access to Microsoft Services Hub which allows you to create, manage, and track support requests while staying current on Microsoft technologies with access to select self-paced learning paths

Overall easy to use and intuitive, although limited in the possibility to personalize layout and look & feel of a site. Some functionalities are not easy to use, like document editing, but some others are quick and effective (posts and tagging above all). Performance and responsiveness of the Yammer site is typically acceptable, in my experience.

Support for SharePoint is quite good. Microsoft provides good support. Microsoft offers
  • Quick turnaround time for issues
  • A range of support services
  • Access to a network of resources
  • Escalation of issues
  • Ongoing development and commitment to produce enhancement
The majority of support is required for initial installation. Once complete and the system is operating we have had very few support issues.

We have never had to use the support for Yammer. The tool works well and we have not come across any bugs. User Interface is simple and easy to use, similar to other forum type products, thereby removing the need for any extensive training. Team members are invited in and immediately are able to start using the tool.

In-Person Training

The face to face training I received was on SharePoint Administration. It was rushed as there was a lot of information to cover and the application of the labs weren't that great either. I like to be able to relate what I am learning to what I am currently doing.

Online Training
Microsoft
I like to learn at my own pace and online training allows for that. Additionally, you can skip through pieces of content that you already know or are already comfortable with. Microsoft actually offers great videos on their website for basic fundamental SharePoint Training. I have used these training videos in some of my own training sessions with end users.

Our team briefly used Salesforce.com's Chatter product before switching over to Yammer in 2012. While Chatter is essentially the same product as Yammer, it left much to be desired. Chatter's design was (and remains) clunky and difficult to navigate. Yammer is a simple, easy-to-use product that offers similar functionality as Salesforce's Chatter.

Return on Investment
Microsoft
  • It comes with Office 365. It won't cost you any additional charges.
  • It will help you to streamline your communication and work as a central hub for all tasks, files[,] and events[.]
  • Setting it up will need a bit [of] planning. If you jump blindly it will become a confusing place for your team members and make them frustrated[.]

  • My company is pleased with the positive impact Yammer has created departmentally and on an individual basis with work flow efficiency.
  • Adversely, most old and new employees are more familiar with SharePoint, causing the company to pay for training for all current and incoming employees.
  • As Yammer becomes more widely used, the need for training may diminish, which is where we will see our return on investment, as the product clearly provides a more effective form of file sharing and communication between employees and their department.
